Review
Praise for HOW MUCH OF US THERE WAS: 'Michael Kimball never ceases to astonish. His sentences build worlds, and are worlds. How Much of Us There Was doesn't represent life, it is life, and with this novel Michael Kimball proves once again he is a hero of contemporary fiction.' Sam Lipsyte Praise for THE WAY THE FAMILY GOT AWAY: 'The largeness of the message should not detract from the intricacy of fine, precise storytelling ! he has taken it [American literature] somewhere very dark and unsettling.' The Times 'Occasionally a novel by a new writer will cause critics to choke with excitement. This is one.' The Scotsman 'An extraordinary novel' Express

Product Description
An intense, heartbreaking, new novel from one of the brightest, and most unusual voices in American fiction. 'Fine, precise and shocking, but how will Kimball follow this incredible debut?' asked THE TIMES in 2001. HOW MUCH OF US THERE WAS is Michael Kimball's bold reply. It is a small masterpiece. A husband wakes up to find that his wife has had a seizure during the night. An ambulance is called and she is rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at a nearby hospital, where she lies in a coma. By day he sits anxiously beside her. He tries to think of ways to wake her up. He brings familiar objects to her bedside -- her books, her hairbrush, flowers from their garden. He talks to her. He exercises her limbs. At night he sleeps in the chair at her bedside, dreaming that she will wake up, so that they can go back home. Years later the story of this same slow death is re-told by their grandson. He wants to understand his grandmother's life and death, what it meant to his grandfather, and what it means to him. He wants to understand the long and deeply loving marriage between his grandparents, and -- in his own words -- 'how love can accumulate between two people over and through two lifetimes'. How Much of Us There Was is a poignant, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful novel, from an extraordinary voice in American fiction.

3.0 out of 5 stars gut wrenching, 11 Dec 2007

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is a devastating little novella. Written in short chapters of a page or two at most, it tells the story of an elderly man who wakes up in bed to find his wife has had a seizure and won't wake up. He takes her to the hospital and charts her progress until her eventual death. This story is interspersed with a narrator's voice who occasionally writes about the same story from both a third person and personal viewpoint, as the elderly pair's grandson, and as the author looking at the experience from a slightly more objective point of view.
It is an odd little book, moving and deeply sad, but also weird in places. The old man talks about how he and his wife practice for her death, and there are occasional sequences where the wife talks to the old man from her coma state and beyond the grave.
The chapter headings are quite annoying, almost haiku like they kind of spoil the plot, giving too much structure to what is already a highly structured work, and kind of forcing you to look for the incidents pegged out in the titles and navigate by them.
I preferred the sections where the old man is speaking. His voice seems tender and much more true and affecting than that of the grandson's which seems to break into the elegaic mood and smash it to bits.
A strange book.
