Product Description

Review

The Double Eagle is a rare twenty-dollar gold coin, minted in 1933 but withdrawn and melted down soon after. Officially it never existed. But now one has turned up in the stomach of a murdered priest in Paris. Could it be one of five coins stolen from Fort Knox where they had been kept in secret? The daring robbery is to be investigated by FBI agent Jennifer Browne. Her mission: the recovery of the remaining coins. Chief suspect for the robbery is ex-rogue-CIA man, Tom Kirk, now a professional art thief. He was thought to have died some years ago, but his DNA has been linked to a single hair left behind at a recent theft in New York`s Fifth Avenue. Discovered by Jennifer in London, Tom is forced to assist her in finding the coins if he wants to clear his name with the US government. The pair of them are up against a criminal mastermind, and their search takes them to Paris, Amsterdam and Istanbul. A story with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the last page. "We're into Dan Brown territory ... in fact, Twining's writing is considerably more impressive"

2.0 out of 5 stars very average indeed, 16 Aug 2006

Thief and FBI agent team up to recover some lost coins. One dimensional characters in a very average plot. The bad guys (and the `twists') are very obvious) and while there is nothing wrong with this book, it never rises above being average. While it is an easy page turner there is no substance in its `by the numbers' writing. I would consider buying a follow up as this was not actually bad and in the right situation might keep you occupied for a couple of hours, just don't have any high expectations.

3.0 out of 5 stars Novel or Screenplay?, 16 Jan 2006
This review is from: The Double Eagle (Paperback)
Where do I start with this one. I have given the book a 3* rating mainly due to the fact that there is nothing actually wrong with it. However there is not much right either.

The storyline is basic and at some points wandering. It starts off very slowly with some extremely dragged out descriptions, there is nothing left to your imagination and every possible detail is drummed into you.

The characters are, in my humble opinion, written with actors in mind and this is not a good thing. The lead male "Tom Kirk" quickly descends into an almost plagiarised version of Ethan Hunt from the Mission Impossible films even going as far as to re-create his abseiling type trick from the film.

Don't get me wrong, if you have never read another book from this genre then this is not a bad starting point. It is easy reading and good fun at times. If however you are an avid reader of thriller style books then you will be left with the distinct impression that you've seen it all before somewhere else. Which you probably have.

This is a reasonable debut and I probably will read the authors next offering with a hope that it will be slightly more original.

2.0 out of 5 stars Be careful with your money, 24 Jun 2007
By Christopher Morgan "Chris" (Liverpool, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Double Eagle (Paperback)
Twining is one of the few authors that I would not get indignant over if he was compared to Dan Brown. I read Da Vinci too long ago to remember it but suffice to say that Digital Fortress which I got as a gift was absolutely terrible and that this book felt the same. Infact if the name Dan Brown had been slapped on the front I would not have at all been surprised, that said I did buy it and read it and it was better (though marginally) than Digital Fortress. The reason I offer this comparison is to those who found Digital Fortress or similar books good will inevitably like this production.

For me however the book itself is very shallow, the characters unconvincing and the plot is another ill bred variation of the going trend. The book is a no brainer and requires no thinking to keep up with which would make it ideal for the distracted bus ride but unsuitable for people wanting a deeper more literate and intriguing read (Have a look at Paul Sussmans Lost Army of Cambyses for a similar style but much better book).

Also worth pointing out is that this book is the first in the series the second being The Black Sun, if you are going to buy one get Black Sun as it was slightly better. DO NOT whatever you do buy them both and read Black Sun first as Twining does not take any care that other authors do in not giving away the endings of previous books in a series. If you do than the entire book of Double Eagle will be a bit ruined as youll know the ending and plot from page one.
