I loved the party paupers column in the Guardian - and the collected version is even better because it's in a more user friendly format. Well written, unusual recipes that make the most of seasonal produce. I find the menu structure very helpful too - so many books give you recipes then let you guess what might work well with that dish. Unfortunately the newspaper version has now finished, so make the most of these £20 dinners!

Newcomer on the scene Silvena Rowe has put together a mouth-watering selection of really tempting alternatives to standard dinner-party fayre. Once you've read this book there are NO EXCUSES for serving chicken in a white wine sauce or just a lasagne - go for gold and don't break the bank. The joy of this book is that alongside each fabulous menu (which is all cleverly priced and with easy to follow instructions) there is an informed and informative wine masterclass from Malcolm Gluck himself.

Silvena and Malcolm - we salute you.
