Product Description

Product Description

A hardback, collector's edition of the Fox-approved tie-in to the Peter Weir feature film of O'Brian's novel, starring Russell Crowe as Jack Aubrey and Paul Bettany ("A Beautiful Mind") as Stephen Maturin. Based on the early novels in the Aubrey-Maturin series, this film brings the high seas to the silver screen with all the excitement and vivacity of an O'Brian book, and the illustrated companion to the film showcases the high production standards and imagination of the film itself. With access to the film set, Tom McGregor weaves together the story of how the world of O'Brian's books - with its seafaring, swashbuckling adventures, highly drawn characterization and elements of romance and intrigue - was brought vividly to life by Peter Weir (director of "Dead Poets' Society", "Greencard" and "The Truman Show").

5.0 out of 5 stars How it should be done!, 5 May 2004
By A Customer
This book was very much an impulse purchase made after loving the film and just happening to spot this in a shop!
Now, this is a perfect example of how a 'making of' book should be done! Just the right balance is reached between detail to do with the actual filming (techy stuff) and the lighter, 'recollections of the cast' type stuff. The writing has struck just the right balance to maintain readership with enough detail, but also to keep them entertained.
With other books in the 'making of' genre, I have often found myself skipping pages when the detail became just a bit too much. This book i read from cover to cover, somewhat smuggly it has to be said. I felt I was getting 'insider info' as well as being throughly entertained. I especially enjoyed the piece towards the back about each of the smaller characters.
Not for months has such a book kept me glued until the small hours of the morning like this one did!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must have for anyone who enjoyed the movie, 15 Mar 2004

I did not choose to buy this book, it was a present - but what a delight it turned out to be. I expected a sort of dull reference book for film buffs, but this extremely well illustrated and presented book was much more than that.
It is split into sections covering not just the making of the movie, but diverse subjects such as the historical context of the British Navy at that time, the author of the series of books and the developing of the story. In fact, the actors have quite a minor chapter in the book.
One of the larger chunks of the book, and one of the most fascinating, was the design and making of the ships themselves, and the efforts to keep it as authentic as possible, including the historical records of the ships the books were based on.
This is one of those books that you can read from cover to cover - the stories behind the movie are truly as interesting as the movie itself!

4.0 out of 5 stars An amazing book and great companion to the movie, 20 Oct 2003
Having read the original book of ‘far side of the world’ I was very pleased to hear of the movie coming out. I purchased this book as soon as it was released and have found it a wonderful addition to the movie.
It has very interesting facts and information on the historic events and of the movie.

The book itself is very well laid out and is bright and colourful.

From start to finish I enjoyed reading far side of the sun and I feel the same way about the making of movie book.

I fully recommend you purchase this book and you won’t regret it, whether you have seen the movie yet or not this is a solid fun book.
