Product Description

Evidence that clears the name of a boy sentenced for killing his adopted mother arrives too late to save his life - so who did kill her? Dr. Arthur Calgary takes a ferry across the Rubicon River to Sunny Point, the home of the Argyle family. A year before, the matriarch of the family was murdered and a son, Jack, was convicted and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. Throughout the trial Jack had maintained his innocence, claiming he was hitchhiking on the night of the murder and he had been picked up by a middle-aged man in a dark car. Unable to locate this mystery man the police viewed Jack's as a lie. Calgary was the stranger in question, but he arrives to late for Jack -- who succumbs to pneumonia after serving just six months of his sentence. Feeling a sense of duty to the Argyles, Calgary is surprised when his revelation has a disturbing effect on the family -- it means one of the family is a murderer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting character study, 26 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Jack Argyle is acquitted, two years after his death, of murdering his mother, and the revelation of his innocence casts new doubt upon everyone in the Argyle household. Thus begins this Agatha Christie whodunit. Though it cannot compare to her earlier, better works, ORDEAL BY INNOCENCE does hold its own.

ORDEAL BY INNOCENCE is most notable for the remarkable strength of all the characterizations, the dark, menacing atmosphere, and the fascinating themes of guilt and innocence that Christie brings up. The plot is not as intricate or complex as her masterpieces, but the clues are laid with absolutely impeccable skill, and the solution is both clever and surprising. One of her best late books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading, 1 May 1999
By A Customer
The book "ordeal by innocence" was very good because it plays with the personality of the caracters. It is interesting to see how they deal with the murder of Mrs Argyle. There are many interesting caracters with a "strange personality". The end of the book is very good, but for the fans of Agatha Christie they will see that is very easy to reach the final conclusions.

3.0 out of 5 stars Depresing and easy., 6 Jun 2001
By W. O'NEILL "Sochalien anglais" (Wirral, England.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Very dark book, dealing with the proof of Jacko Argyle's innocence after his death and the subsequent search for a killer. The atmosphere is dark and brooding, but this is overdone and the book is far from easy to read. Also, there are clues dropped left, right and centre and the identity of the murderer is clear well before the end. Not one of her best.

2.0 out of 5 stars murder by proxy
A clever enough solution, but the narrative is turgid & laboured, most of the characters unmemorable.
