Product Description

Product Description

This title charts the rise and development of the globally recognised, iconic model train set. The book is both a celebration and a history of Hornby Trains, telling the story of the company from its beginnings in the imagination of a Liverpool shipping clerk, Fred Hornby (who also invented Meccano) through its heyday as industry front runner to its take-over by Triang and, ultimately, the restoration of the Hornby name as a 21st-century global brand. Archive and specially-commissioned photographs of historic sets, rarities, special editions and celebrity owners illustrate the development of the train sets themselves, from clockwork to electric, from tinplate models to a contemporary computer-generated virtual railway.

From the Inside Flap

Hornby the official Illustrated History,
is the first full colour illustrated book to cover the rise and development of the three main model railway systems that have borne the famous Hornby name over the last 82 years.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and evocative journey, 30 Jul 2003
By Mr. MG Lock (Great Britain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Somewhat of a half way halt, this book is incomplete by it's own admission - urging the reader to source other widely available books for a fuller, more detailed picture. However, as a overview of the mixed fortunes of Hornby, and a glimpse into the products that they have produced over the years it is excellent. As a non-technical person, I gained a huge amount of understanding of real world technology and practices - as the author does not assume any prior knowledge (like most other publications) - and coupled with historical information where needed, they do a fantastic job of empowering the reader with vital information whilst not deviating from the Horny story in any way. The illustrations and photos are beautiful and plentiful, though sadly I can only give four stars as so many of the company's milestone (in my view) products - such as the super detailed and weathered 9Fs of recent years are simply ommitted. None the less, a fantastic and surprisingly interesting story - inextricably linked to a nostalgic and innocent childhood experience, for the majority of us never to be experienced in this day and age, else long forgotten.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 27 Jan 2005
By A Customer
Pompous writing style, lots of flannel to make up the word count. Covers the basic story but leaves a lot out. Refers to other books - then why did we buy this one? Could not find any reference to Collins, Phil or Clapton, Eric, despite blurb above. The concept for the book is OK - could have been done better, with more pics too.
