Product Description

Product Description
This fourth edition of "Collins Gem Whisky" proves that whisky continues to attract many interested followers, from those with experienced palates, who have very definite ideas on what they like and often are prepared to pay plenty to get it, to beginners, who possibly feel intimidated by the range and breadth of choice available and are unsure of where to start. The features of this guide include: entries for over 150 whiskies and the distilleries that produce them, complete with details of age, strength and taste rating and comment, plus histories and visitor arrangements; information on single and vatted malts, grain and de luxe whiskies, and the most popular blends; and sections on the history of Scotch Whisky-making, how Scotch whisky is made, its regional characteristics, reading whisky labels and how to develop the palate.

About the Author
Carol P. Shaw has written a number of books on subjects of Scottish interest, including Scottish Recipes, Scottish Myths and Customs and Classic Malts, all for HarperCollins Publishers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful pocket reference, 15 May 2003
This review is from: Whisky (Collins GEM) : (Paperback)
This little volume fits neatly in your pocket for quick and easy reference when in the pub, bar or other outlet with more than just rudimentary selection of whiskies on offer.
Coverage of each whisky is not extensive but is sufficient for making a decision on whether to sample or to abstain.
For those who need to make an even quicker decision than what can be concluded from the text, each whisky description is also accompanied by a highlight giving the core facts of age, strength (%) and taste rating (1-5, mild to robust).

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for Whisky lovers., 13 Dec 2002
By Ian C. Hayes "ian5171" (Leicestershire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Whisky (Collins GEM) : (Paperback)
This little guide is a must for all those who have an interest in whisky. Simply laid out with details on virtually all Scotch Whiskies. There is also a detailed description on how whisky is produced, real mouth watering stuff. If after reading this you don't have the urge to rush off to the off license then you are not a true whisky fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars An accessible introduction!, 18 Jun 2008
By Mr. D. A. F. Weaver - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This tiny book is a great, accessible introduction to whisky - it acts as a helpful reference for the experienced connoisseur, as well as a decent guide for the novice. All of the main brands, and quite a few of the more unique single malts, are covered, making this small but fact-packed book an essential reference.
