The first part of this companion volume to the innovative Channel Four film series, Ancient Egyptians, gives a whistle-stop tour from earliest beginnings through five millennia of civilization of the Nile. This works well as an overview (helped by the Chronology provided), though even the mightiest pharaohs (like military campaigner, Tuthmosis III or prolific builder, Rameses II|) make only brief appearances. With the scene set, the second part tells four stirring tales, taken from different periods - of a soldier conscripted for the Battle of Megiddo, a tomb robber, a temple murder and betrayed twin girls, employed to mourn the sacred Apis Bull. Each was featured separately in the TV series. These are real stories, pieced carefully together from scattered sources, about ordinary people caught up in dramatic events. Illustrated throughout in colour (you will recognise the impressive photographic spreads and use of computer graphics if you watched the programmes), Ancient Egypt is presented as it actually might have seemed at the time.
