Time Out

"This is a stometimes witty...always thought-provoking guide ...a portable gathering of wise advice for every readership"

Product Description

An anthology of poems to help you through the battle of the sexes. This book aims to be the poetic alternative to the friend at the end of the phone. Ditch "the rules", pop psychology, scented candles, life coaches and aromatherapy. If you want to win the battle of the sexes listen to the people who know - the poets who through the ages, have been there too...Daisy Goodwin introduces each section of poems with her usual tongue-in-cheek, witty, and serious, linking narratives. Sections include: how to make yourself irresistible (see Margaret Atwood's "Siren Song": "the song that forces men to leap overboard in squadrons..."); what he really means when he says...; why doesn't he ring?; flirting; how to be seductive; hot dates; mind games; and getting over him.

5.0 out of 5 stars a pleasure for the senses, 5 Nov 2002

No doubt there are many "intellectuals" who would not rush out to buy this collection on the basis that it is populist. All I can say to that is it is their loss.

I found this to be a delightful, heartwarming and at times tongue in cheek look at the dichotomy of the sexes. I can't say that it has given me any greater understanding of men (nothing new there then) however it did give intriguing glimpses of the contorted workings of the male mind.

No matter my mood a dip between the pages never fails to bring a smile to my face. So buy it and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars a poem for every occasion, 3 Nov 2002

For those who dismiss collections such as this on the grounds that they are too populist I can only say, it's your loss.

I love virtually every poem in this book, and have spent many happy hours dipping into it. If I had one criticism to make it is that I want more! The dichotomy of the sexes is dealt with in an even handed way and yes it does actually help to see the way men think differently. I don't know that it helps us to understand but then that would be miraculous. So don't judge a book by its pastel cover and buy this.
