5.0 out of 5 stars Advance copy! And its great!, 14 May 2004
I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of 'The Taking' and let me say the Master of suspense has completed his master work! This book defines Koontz as did 'The Stand' for Steven King. There is not much I can say about the plot for I do not want to ruin the surprises, but think acopolypse comes to main street! Buy this Book!
I Also recommended: 'A Tourist in the Yucatan' sharp thriller!

3.0 out of 5 stars "Message" leaves a bad taste in the mouth, 23 Jan 2007
By G. Owens "rockcandyman" (West Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Taking (Paperback)
I enjoyed most of this book for its nightmarish atmosphere, imaginative creatures and intriguing, "what's-really-going-on-here" plot. But right from the start, there's a slightly uncomfortable "Religious Right" feel to several passages (with Koontz griping about fence-sitters and peace-lovers, judicial leniency, etc.). By the end of the book, sure enough, he's making it clear that everything we've just witnessed - terror, violence, suffering and death on an unimaginable scale - is actually just what humanity needed to get rid of the all the dead wood and make the world a safer place for God-fearing, gun-toting all-American heroes. And supposedly this is a book about "hope"! Really rather unpleasant when you think about it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fundamentalist Hogwash, 24 Jan 2007
This review is from: The Taking (Paperback)
Absolute drivel!!
Don't get me wrong, I used to like Dean Koontz - not Dickens, but literate and entertaining. I especially liked 'Watchers' and 'The Face'. He seemed intelligent, humane and was a good bet for a long journey read.

Unfortunately in his last few books he appears to degenerate into complete senility. For those readers that do not recognise the message of this book.. it is about the 'rapture' an event predicted in the bible, whereby God/Jesus takes into heaven the worthy and leaves the rest behind. Some people believe this is imminent! Dean Koontz is obviously one of them. Take this along with his recent championing of 'intelligent' design and I think we can see that he is far along the road to cerebral decay. Blatant proselytizing of the most shameless kind. The job of a fiction author is to entertain NOT convert.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very readable but
I enjoyed a lot of this book. Often, though, I thought an idea had been 'Taken' from some movie or other. The ending was annoying. Bad people are punished. Read more
