5.0 out of 5 stars Lord of the Rings Simply Magic, 15 Dec 2001
I first read this book under the covers with a torch aged 8 years. It fuelled my imagination and changed my life giving me a deep interest in history and literature and art. This book deserves to be owned in hardback and the work deserves the many accolades it has received over the years. It was written at a time when Made in Britain meant quality. This book is finely crafted and unlike those works inspired by it was written by a literary genius capable of creating an imaginary world in every detail.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books ever written., 28 Sep 2001

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I have read these novels more times than I care to remember and enjoyed them everytime... I have also spotted little things that I had previously missed, so its well worth re-reading as well.

All I can say is read it. However you might ask why 4 stars and not 5 stars.... having looked at this book in the book shop I was rather narked to note the poor quality of the book itself... It looked like it could stand being read a few times then it would fall to bits... I would personaly advise either getting the seperate novels or getting a hard backed version if you want to be able to re-read this book.... and you will.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of BBC audio dramatisation, 29 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Employing a superb theatrical cast, and making good use of the BBC's long experience in dramatisations of classic literature, this adaptation is a landmark production. As epic fantasy it benefits, like the book, from the best of all possible visual imagery: that provided by the imagination of its audience.

Careful editing and selection by Brian Sibley retains all of the cardinal points in this epic adventure, while maintaining dramatic pace (and keeping the drama to an acceptable length. Fans of digressional characters - such as the "nature spirit" Tom Bombadil - may disagree with some of these editorial decisions.)

The tale's growth in scale from the little world of the Shire and its Hobbit population through to the heroic proportions of the final battle for the soul of the world of Middle-Earth is faithfully rendered, as is the parallel growth in stature and depth of the main characters. The powerful score and atmospheric effects by the Radiophonic Workshop make this a compelling and involving work, whether the listener is familiar with the book or a total newcomer.
