Review

'Insights into the power of friendship and being generous don't come much better than this.' Junior

Product Description

A tale showing the importance of friendship. Alan Snow's quirky drawings ensure children will be asking for this book again and again. On a tall, tall cliff there were two little houses. The house nearest the edge was where Puffle lived. From the edge he could look ! ! down ! ! down ! ! to the deep dark rocks far below. The two friends would do anything for each other. But why does Busy need to borrow the entire contents of Puffle's house -- even the walls and the roof? It seems a lot to ask, but it will really help!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE, 12 Jan 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: On a Tall, Tall Cliff (Hardcover)
On a tall tall cliff has become a firm favourite with my 3 year old - it is his favourite bedtime story and I have been reading it to him since he received it for his birthday last September. The story is warm and endearing and the illustrations are brilliant. The plot is simple but cleverly aimed at younger readers - all my friends who have bought this book - have nothing but great praise for it - we are Andrew Murray fans already and my son loves all his books - they are funny and warm and just manage to hit the spot with the under 5's.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tale of trust on a teetering cliff with magical illustrations. , 2 Aug 2008

Busby and Puffle are next door neighbours and good friends. Busby becomes aware that disaster is looming for Puffle, however, and so makes a series of increasingly large, seemingly bizarre and unreasonable requests. Puffle does worry that Busby is making a fool of him, but he trusts his friend completely which ultimately pays off when a portion of the cliff falls down, down, down to the deep dark rocks below. My children love this book although I did wonder why Busby was able to issue instructions but not a helping hand as poor Puffle shifts "his walls and the mice between them, his rafters and the nails in them, his bricks and the mortar between them, his floorboards and the secrets beneath them". The prose is great, descriptive and fast flowing. However, the real magic of this book is undoubtedly in the illustrations. They are colourful, detailed and humorous and the children enjoy the little touches such as the mice cheerfully struggling with removals, the dog in the bath and the birds manouvring the toilet into its new position. We also particularly love the detailed endpapers - double page pictures of the surrounding area - the first a neighbouring village (and the round-nosed shark kissing the submarine) and the second, a lighthouse and pirate ship.
This is a lively and funny picture book, perfect for a summer break on the Cornish coast!

3.0 out of 5 stars A clever story with an interesting twist, 27 Jul 2008

My five year old daughter is particularly enamoured of this story at the moment. It has a great twist at the end and she is very good at keeping it secret. She persuaded a friend of ours to read it to her recently and I could hear the friend sounding off about what an unsuitable book it was because the main character was so selfish. Then she found herself having to eat her words at the end, much to my daughter's delight.

The illustrations are crisp, nicely detailed and yet not so busy that a child would find it difficult to engage with. The story is about the nature of true friendship and is full of endearing jokes and surprises. A lovely book.
