Product Description

Product Description

This guide is intended for artists with some painting experience who wish to develop their technique, style and outlook. It aims to make the reader think and to push the technical and personal boundaries of what they believe they can achieve in paint. Mike's teaching focuses not only on techniques but also on expanding the readers' approach to their painting as a whole. Starting with a look at the development of watercolour as an expressive art, the book then covers selective techniques, both traditional and the more unusual, and topics such as observation, drawing, colour and composition. All kinds of painting subjects are included, from the natural landscape to urban scenes, and throughout the book Mike provides plenty of practical advice and useful tips about techniques. There are also a number of special features, focusing on particular aspects of painting, as well as several full step-by-step demonstration paintings.

About the Author

He has taught in several art schools and now lectures at an adult education college. He writes regularly for magazines, including The Artist, and has contributed to various publications. This is his first book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Art Book for Watercolourists, 29 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I bought this book because I found that as an Art expert on Water Colour Challenge on Channel 4 Mike Chaplin always has something fresh and constructive to say. As it turned out the book is a revelation. He makes it all so interesting and his painting are fabulous, all the tips he gives are practical and as well as advising on expensive items he also give hints on using easily available articles. His tips are so down to earth and suit both the beginner and experienced painter. Even if you do not paint buy the book for the pictures. MORE, MORE,

His paintings vibrate with colours, his tips are useful and the book is a real pleasure to read. You'll pick it up again and again...
Beautiful pictures which invites you to pick up a brush and start putting paint on paper.
