Product Description

Synopsis
A repugnant Amercian widow is killed during a trip to Petra...Among the towering red cliffs of Petra, like some monstrous swollen Buddha, sat the corpse of Mrs Boynton. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist was the only sign of the fatal injection that had killed her. With only 24 hours available to solve the mystery, Hercule Poirot recalled a chance remark he'd overheard back in Jerusalem: 'You see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?' Mrs Boynton was, indeed, the most detestable woman he'd ever met!

About the Author
Agatha Christie is the best-selling author of all time. She has sold over 2 billion novels worldwide and has been translated into more languages than any other single writer.

Born on 15 September 1890 in Devon, England, her career spanned six decades in which time she published 80 novels and short story collections and 19 plays. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles published in 1920, was written as a result of a challenge from her sister. In it she would introduce to the world Hercule Poirot, one of the most famous fictional characters of all time. Poirot would appear in over 80 novels and short stories. Nine years later Agatha created Miss Marple - a spinster sleuth who would become so popular she would rival Poirot in the nation's affections.

Her writing won her many fans including the royal family. When Queen Mary was approaching her 80th birthday, the BBC asked how she would want them to celebrate it. She requested a new Christie play! Three Blind Mice was duly written for the radio; it would later be adapted into The Mousetrap and become the longest continuously running play in history.

Although best known for her detective fiction, Christie also wrote a number of books that give us insight into her world. Her autobiography, published the year after her death provides a full, and often humorous, account of her life and Come, Tell Me How You Live chronicles her travels as the wife of a world famous archaeologist, on digs in the Middle East.

Agatha Christie had a truly remarkable life; she was a very private lady though her love of travel and archaeology shines through in her work. Her most famous novel Murder on the Orient Express celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2009 and was inspired by her own travels on the train, when she too became stranded due to weather.

After a hugely successful career and a very happy life Agatha died peacefully on 12 January 1976.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another enjoyable play, 1 Nov 2002
This review is from: Appointment with Death (Audio CD)
It seems that, though BBC TV are rapidly desappearing down the tubes, Radio 4 can still come up with the goods. That said, this is not the best Poirot story in their repatoire, although it's enjoyable all the same. The ending is ludicrous, but surprsing (the fault of Agatha Christie not of the writer) and it doesn't do such a good job of evoking the Middle Eastern setting as the wonderful adaptation of Murder in Mesapotamia did. Also, some of the acting is a little dodgy, most notably John Woodnut, who is miscast as Colonel Carbury.

That said, if you want to be transported to a world of mysterious old monuments and murder in the desert for an hour and a half, you could do much worse. Hugely enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Agatha once again beats me to the solution, 18 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Christie's most successful and popular books hold a pattern. Her writing subtely encourages you to suspect everyone except the real murderer, who you ignore. Even when you know the rules of her writing and the tricks she plays, she is so brilliant as to still deceive you. Appointment With Death fits that pattern, and as such is a very pleasing read for fans of classic Agatha Christie. There are a limited number of suspects in an isolated area, and details of times and locations are added to muddy the waters. However, there in the middle of the situation is Poirot, quietly confident. As usual, if you have a mind like Poirot's and are really paying attention, you can work it out. For us mere mortals, there is always the answer at the end of the book, and very satisfying it is too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugh Fraser is a great choice, 23 Aug 2005

This Five disk set is well worth your money, you get so much more detail with the books than you do with the two hour TV shows with Six hours listening the unabridged Poirot is a joy to listen to.
Hugh Fraser is a great choice to read these books and if you like his voice he has a great gift for playing the different parts.
My only question is why did it take so long for someone to do away with Mrs Boynton!
