Product Description

Product Description

The complete history of the tennis tournament known simply as The Championships, which has been held since 1877 at the All-England Club, Wimbledon. The Wimbledon Championships began life in 1877 as little more than a Victorian summer pastime. Nowadays, for two weeks in June, the whole of the tennis world converges SW19 for one of the defining moments of the British summer. In Wimbledon: The Official History of the Championships, endorsed by the All England Club, John Barrett chronicles the fascinating story of the development of the tournament decade by decade, set against the backdrop of world events to provide an entirely new perspective. He describes the great players who have appeared at The Championships, discusses some of the controversies that have raged, such as the dramatic exit of Suzanne Lenglen in 1926 and the scandalous reaction to the lace panties of 'Gorgeous' Gussie Moran in 1949, and some of the truly great moments, the duals between McEnroe and Borg and, more recently, Pete Sampras' seventh singles title. Within each decade are photographs and biographies of every men's and ladies singles champion, complete with every singles result from the 114-year history of The Championships, contained in an impressive statistics section. Containing more than 400 photographs, Wimbledon: The Official History of the Championships is an absorbing portrait of an occasion that has become as much an institution as an international sporting event.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide to the Best Sporting Event in the World, 7 Aug 2001
By A Customer
From it's humble beginnings to the multi-million pound business it is today, the All England Lawn Tennis Championships (simply known to us all as Wimbledon) has become a national institutuion. John Barrett's exellent book charts the development of this phenomenon through it's 114 year history.

The book is divided into reader-friendly chapters focussing on 10-15 years at a time' using the socio-political events of each era as a starting point. Barrett then comprehensively details the dramas of the event during each period. All the great names and their achievements are featured, from Arthur Gore to Pete Sampras. This book brathes life into the stars of previous generations and it is a fascinating read. I found it a joy to learn of names from the past (Renshaw, Lenglen, Connelly, Laver and Borg) and to have their stories placed in each context.

We also learn that most of what we associate with the game today is in fact a long-standing tradition. For anyone who believes the Kournikova obsession to be a modern media-encouraged phenomenon, we learn that in 1949 Gussie Moran had the same legions of admirers and newspaper space as she played in frilly knickers, and the many photographs show the familiar scenes of the court coverers in action back in 1928, and the overnight queues in 1957.

The book also contains a volume of statistics to please even the most dedicated of tennis anoraks. In fact, every singles draw from 1877 to 2000 is listed in full. There are potted biographies of all singles champions, and the weight of all this detail is broken through the hundreds of photographs.

The comfortable yet authoratitive voice of John Barrett, which we all know through our annual watching of the event on tv, is unmistakeable throughout. This is a weighty tome and yet it was a delight to read, study and learn from. My only complaint was that it was published ahead of the remarkable events of the 2001 championships. I look forward to the next edition!
