Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Getmapping.com came up with a beautifully simple idea in 1998: photograph the whole of the UK from the air to create a kind of modern Doomsday Book. Then they and HarperCollins realised that the London part of the survey would give a unique view of one of the world's most famous cities, and so this book was born. It really is unbelievably simple, and of interest to any lover of London who also enjoys maps and photographs. Getmapping.com flew a plane at 5,500 feet taking photos automatically, then digitised the photos so they could be colour-corrected and adjusted to allow for variations in light, weather, contours and the plane's flight. The result is a homogenous set of photographs of the whole city, with a conventional street atlas stuck on the back. Every street in London is indexed to both the photographic and the cartographic atlas, so you should be able to find any place you want quickly and easily.

A word about the scale of the photos, particularly about what the potential reader can expect to see clearly: in order to make the size of the book manageable, the scale increases as you move out from the centre. There are 74 pages of central London (Regent's Park to the South Bank, and Earls Court to Whitechapel) at 1:3000, 112 of inner London (Richmond to the Isle of Dogs, Highgate to Dulwich) at 1:6000, 96 of outer London at 1:12000, and 40 pages of cartography covering the whole of London at 1: 24000. In central London the roofs of individual houses can be picked out easily; in inner London they are still discernible, though not so clearly; by the time you get to outer London it's more a question of finding a street. --David Pickering

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book for any Londoner!, 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This book is the next best thing to a flight over London. If you think you know London, think again! Ones eyes are opened, seeing the whole metropolis from a new perspective! It is refreshing to see true vertical photography, rather than the oblique views which are familiar in other 'aerial views' books. In these there are always areas that are obscured/hidden. A further bonus is the road atlas published at the end of the volume which acts as an index sheet and a further means of identification.

The views are shown at different scales for Central and Outer London, but both provide adequate detail.

This will provide hours of 'fun' for anyone who has an interest in London.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quality read for all anoraks!!, 2 Jan 2002
By A Customer
I found this book a typical coffee table book, pickup on the off chance and spend the next hour finding addresses that were important to me to reminse, great fun.

Ideal present for loved one who is interested in London.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best coffee table book of all time, 19 Jan 2004

(REAL NAME)
This book is the ultimate gift for the person that you don't know what to buy for (provided they live in London).

In a nutshell, this book is an A-Z that is made up of colour aerial photographs rather than drawings.

So why is it so good?

Actually, I don't know. There is actually very little that seperates this from an A-Z, but there is a magic quality about this book. You just HAVE to look things up - your house, your mum's house, your friend's house. You want to know what the gardens of people down your street look like.

This book makes you feel like you have an American spy satellite over London. The short cuts you used to take are visible, even if they were through waste-ground.

You must buy this book on-line. Why? Simply because every copy I have ever seen in a book shop has been wrecked by every single passer-by being compelled to flick through it and look something up. And there are very few books like that.

It's big, heavy and a work of art. If you are paying under £45, its a bargain. Most people would pay twice that for a book of this quality and enduring appeal. It's a snapshot (literally) of what London looked like in 2000. Definetely something to keep for 50 years.

Nobody can resist opening this book and looking at it, guests, family members and friends all want to find something here. Buy, buy, buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding photography
There have been other collections of aerial views of the capital - but nothing as detailed as this. The photographs are simply outstanding.
