Review

Praise for Clutch of Phantoms: 'One to watch -- gripping psychological thrillers of above-average intelligence, from a writer who knows her stuff. Thoroughly recommended.' Ian Rankin 'A compelling psychological drama' The Times 'A tense and gripping thriller' Mail on Sunday

Product Description

The second novel by the author of Clutch of Phantoms, this is another highly intelligent, powerfully paced psychological suspense novel. Twenty years before the novel starts, a group of male students were appalled to discover that one of them had apparently raped a girl, then hanged himself in remorse. This terrible incident, and their guilt at not having prevented it, hangs over them as they continue their outwardly successful careers. But in their midst comes a young, ambitious journalist -- Ginty Schell -- who is researching features on how men today have lost their way. She focuses on this old, once famous story, and becomes the men's nemesis. In her search she will not only endanger all of them, but dramatically alter her own life. Like Clutch of Phantoms, Those Whom the Gods Love raises fascinating issues on our attitudes to violence, on the dynamics of group friendship, and on the weight that worship of celebrity can lay on all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from a superb writer, 20 April 2003
By Dianna Bingham (Brisbane, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book had a totally different "feel" to it than the first Clare Layton but without giving away the climax, it is just as gripping. Ginty is a very sympathetic character and although some of the decisions she makes are the wrong ones, they are totally in keeping with her nature (as so well depicted by the author) that she makes the ones she does. The author pulls no punches nor does she whitewash any character. Like Ginty, you see them warts and all as she uncovers the truth about the past. As she delves further into what happened long ago in Oxford, lives are changed including her own and she makes a journey of discovery in ways she never expected. Clare Layton (Natasha Cooper) is one of my favourite writers. Any subject she chooses to wrap her plot around is not only meticulously researched but believably interwoven with the lives of her characters - a great read and totally recommended.
