Product Description

Product Description

We all want to know about the content of our food - but when it comes to the chemicals which we massage into our skin, soak our bodies in, scrub our teeth and gums with or paint onto delicate facial skin we are very trusting of cosmetics companies. A fifth of the chemicals used by the cosmetics industry are known to cause harm. That's about 1000 commonly used substances. This guide does not set out to scare, but rather to provide information to help us make informed choices about toiletries and beauty products.

From the Author

How to crack the cosmetic code.
Have you ever used a cosmetic or toiletry that has left you with sore or itching skin? Have you then looked at the list of ingredients to find out why, only to be faced with a meaningless list of chemicals? Like most people, you’ve probably given up at this first hurdle and have simply stopped using the products that don’t agree with you. We tend to be very trusting. We assume that the products we buy are safe and that what the advertisers say is true. If we have a problem with a cosmetic we assume it’s because we have sensitive skin rather than because the product contains potentially harmful chemicals. But should we be so trusting? And do these products live up to the advertisers’ claims?

This book helps you to crack the cosmetic code. It helps you to understand what the unpronounceable ingredients are and why they are used. Cosmetics generally have a good safety record and most people have found products they are happy with. But equally, most people have, at some point in their lives, suffered from an adverse reaction to a cosmetic or toiletry. This book will help you to understand why and how to avoid these problems.

Cosmetics Unmasked includes:

- an alphabetical list covering about 2,000 ingredients, explaining their function, where they come from and any known adverse or harmful effects

- an A to Z of cosmetic terms

- an eye-opening guide to what’s in all the main cosmetic products – from lipstick and deodorant to baby wipes and sun cream

- the lowdown on all the commonly used marketing jargon such as ‘anti-ageing’, ‘anti-wrinkle’ and ‘hypo-allergenic’

- guidance on key areas such as baby products, skin conditions, allergies, animal products and animal testing, safe suntans and the ageing process.

With this book, the cosmetics industry will no longer be able to pull the scientific wool over your eyes...

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a bible of information, 4 April 2002
By A Customer
This book covers everything I ever wanted to know about the chemicals that go into my cosmetics and it has completely dispelled all my fears about toxic chemicals in my bathroom. Too many books try to capitalise on these fears or they try to sell me the notion that natural herbs and minerals will keep me young and healthy forever. This book cuts right through all of that and tells it exactly the way it is. It lists all of the ingredients in cosmetics that can be harmful and explains exactly what the problems are with these ingredients and how serious the risks of using them are. It also balances the risks of using these ingredients with the consequences of not using them and gave me practical advice on how to choose a product that is right for me. On top of that it is a surprisingly interesting read and it is a gold mine of information. It covers just about everything from baby shampoo to contact lens cleaners and it even explains the laws that regulate cosmetics in terms that are so simple even I can understand them. It has several sample labels that explain exactly what all those unpronouncable ingredients are and why they are used in cosmetics and toiletries and it explains in plain English what the advertisements mean so the big cosmetics companies can no longer pull the wool over my eyes.

This book gives plenty of sound, common sense advice that everyone should know about. I wish I had it years ago.

4.0 out of 5 stars very useful guide to cosmetics and their secrets, 24 Mar 2001
i heard about this book in time out last week in a very interesting organic issue special. the book is very simple, yet very interesting. it tells you all the little secrets you should know about skincare, cosmetic products and their ingredients. the first part unmasks face and body products, the second part is a complete dictionary of the cosmetic jargon while the third and last part is an alphabetical list of all the suspicious ingredients you may find in cosmetics. it is a very general book mainly considering the approach to cosmetics from large cosmetic companies (and sometimes generalising too much and missing bits and pieces about the small companies), but the overall knowledge you get from it is well worth it. if you are interested in what you do to your body while eating and drinking, you should be interested and concerned about what you slap on your face and body too!!!
