Product Description

Synopsis

Anorexia nervosa is a controversial subject that attracts constant media attention. As an illness it mystifys as much as terrifies. In this book Claire Beeken tells the story of her battle with anorexia. She was first hospitalized at the age of 10 with an eating disorder and spent the next 13 years in a cycle of starvation, binge-eating and laxative abuse. She describes her early years through her teenage years to how she finally gained the upperhand and put herself on the road to recovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book made me start to think I might have a problem., 10 Mar 2002
A close friend who suffers from anorexia lent me her copy of "My Body, My Enemy". At the time I was finding it impossible to concentrate on reading, but it took me less than a day to start and finish this book. I identified with so many of the thoughts and actions that Claire described that it made me realise that I might also have a problem.

Though, at the moment, I can see no way out of anorexia, to read through Claire's long struggle and final victory over the illness has given me some hope that one day I too will be able to rid myself of the spectre of anorexia that lurks by my side constantly.

This is a book that I would like to keep close to hand until the day I can at last say I'm recovered, and after that as a reminder of the hell that I've escaped from. Unfortunately, borrowed books have to be returned, so now I am busy trying to find somewhere I can get my own copy. No easy task! But if you do have the chance to buy or borrow this book, whether or not you suffer from an eating disorder, grab it with both hands as this could be one of the most educational books you ever read!

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing accurate description of this terrifying disorder., 28 Nov 2000
By munkee2@yahoo.com (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have never read such and accurate and detailed description of anorexia nervosa. Claire writes with such honesty and her wording is spot on. Having suffered in very similar ways to Claire, this book helped me find ways of expressing my eating disorder which I never thought possible until I read this book. I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest, touching and tear-jerking, 14 July 2000
By A Customer
Rarely has an autobiography of an eating-disordered individual been so graphically honest. In this book Beeken tells of her "thirteen year struggle with anorexia" detailing the devestating effects it had on her existing relationships and the heart-wrenching relationships, namely with Caraline a fellow sufferer, she makes during her battle. She writes of the terrible abuse she received at the hands of her grandfather and the devestation that the death of Caraline causes "my life spiralled out of control...losing 14 pounds in one week". She goes on to tell of her treatment as an inpatient in a mental hopsital and describes the day to day hell of laxative abuse "As the coached trundled into the night I was forced to skuttle back and forth to that disgusting toilet". This is a heart-rending and exceptionally written account which is a must-read for anyone who knows anyone who is suffereing from an eating disorder - it will help you understand a great deal.
