Product Description

Product Description
If you're a cynic, you're a sucker. 'They' want you to believe in aliens and goblins and UFOs and ghosts, because if you go chasing lies, you never get to the truth. A paranoid public is a pliant public. And that's just how 'they' like it. 'They' are an ultra-secret all-powerful world 'Committee' of shadowy individuals -- the real decision makers who tell governments what to do, dictate which way the stock market's heading, start up a few wars to settle old scores. They've had five centuries' experience of running the world to know that nothing spreads a rumour faster than a carefully worded denial. The truth is, there's nothing worth meeting out there. There are no aliens. Well, actually, that's not quite true. The all powerful ultra-secret 'Committee' think there are none, but they've been so busy manipulating the entire globe they haven't realised that they themselves are being manipulated. Besides, they're too inbred nowadays to see past the end of their noses let alone into the skies. From opposite sides of the globe, former US commando Frank Becker, and UFO enthusiast Dave Anderson, are about to stumble on the biggest conspiracy theory of all. And it's a discovery that threatens to destabalise the whole planet. As the 'Committee' are so fond of saying 'Blessed are the meek, for they shall be stamped upon.' Well, the meek have just put on their boots, and they're ready to do a bit of kicking themselves

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny - superb, 19 Oct 2001

This is a great book - laugh out-loud funny throughout. But there's a deeper meaning behind a lot of it, some of it starts you to thinking about world events in a totaly diferent way . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, amusing, delightful. Buy Buy Buy, 4 April 2001
By A Customer
This is the second book of Matthew Thomas's books I have read (the other being "Before & After", which was wickedly amusing).

This is even better than the first, showing an absolute masterly control of subtleness and humour that had me rolling in the aisles of the tubes, much to the dismay of the morbid monday morning travellers. Once I picked it up I had to carry on reading, which meant I had two exceptionally late evenings and a rather unimpressed group of associates in the mornings.

Its about a weird twisted conspiracy theory that will blow your mind, sucking in people left right and center and culimnating in an explosivley amusing ending. It has action to rival Mr Archer, a blow of humour along the lines of Mr Pratchett, and imgaination that could possibly be compared to that of Mr Clarke's.

I cannot wait for the next book. A super read.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY entertaining, 6 May 2002
By A Customer
This novel is, well, pretty damn good. The simile-laden prose is rather entertaining; also the descriptions of poor nerdy Dave's mangled love life are quite funny and suspiciously accurate, and the Watcher conspiracy is really well thought out.The account of the attack on Urgistan is absolutely brilliant. A wonderful romp across the globe, chokkers with some hiliarious scenes; however there is always a dark undercurrent and it looks a bit as though the author is quite dissilusioned with society, the media and politics, providing some real depth to the story All in all a great read.
