Product Description

Product Description

Life in London during the second world war, as seen through the eyes of a lively nine-year-old boy. Neville Chamberlain has just made the announcement: Great Britain and Germany are at war. Mum worries about Derek in the army; Dad's thinking about the Andersen shelter he's just built in the garden; Elaine is thinking about boys and stockings and her job at the factory. Jenny, aged eleven is worrying about the animals. But Bobbie -- aged nine, has never been so excited in his life. He thinks the war is the most fantastic game. His only worry is that it will end before he is old enough to join up -- he wants to see the planes -- He knows the names of all of them; he wants to catch a German spy; he wants to be kept in the Andersen shelter over night. It's only when his beloved Big Tom, a cat, is missing believed dead, that Bobbie realises the truth about war. A wonderful picture of childhood and a sensitive portrayal of family loyalties in times of crisis. Excitement, terror, misery and humour -- the poignancy of Goodnight Mr Tom plus the humour of Hope and Glory in this beautifully crafted young novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shows there is no good in war, 15 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Tom sister is scared of the war, but Tom thinks it is brilliant all these bombs. All execpted two things , one that he still has to go to school and the bomb shelter his dad built (his dad is a train driver which is a bit tricky when there is all the bombs going off) because his sisters is always crying, it smells and because he has to share with a grumpy old lady. Tom would love to be out there watching all the bombs!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Big Tom, 28 Sep 2009
This is a book suitable for 8/9 year olds
I read it in class to a mixed year 3/4 class.
The boys enjoyed the character of Bobbie and many of the words/events mentioned have been covered in our topicwork for WW2. They were able to predict what would possibly happen and the elements of death aren't dwelt on but are reasonable as introduction to the deglorification of war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read, 3 Jul 2009

The book arrived really quickly, in great condition. The seller kept me informed all along the process and, most important, my daughter loved the book. It is about a boy trying to cope with WW2 and she loved understanding how kids like her felt at such a time
