Review

FRUIT & NUTCASE: "!this is an upbeat yet gritty story about the tenacity of love and the fact that life is never perfect." Scotland on Sunday BECKY BANANAS: "!the writing transcends any trace of heaviness." The Guardian.

Product Description

The fourth title in Jean Ure's acclaimed series of humorous, delightful and poignant stories written in the form of diaries and letters which make them immediately accessible to children. Jean Ure perfectly captures the lives of ordinary children -- but no child is ever ordinary, and certainly not Salvatore d'Amato -- or Sally Tomato, as he's sometimes called. He's out to get a girl and he has a plan: he's going to write some Disgusting Ditties -- one for each letter of the alphabet, and start some secret body-building, too. That way he's bound to attract someone. (But he doesn't want his sister to know his plans!) Whether it's Sal Tomato here, Mandy Small in FRUIT AND NUTCASE, Cherry in SKINNY MELON AND ME, or Becky in BECKY BANANAS, their lives, with all their ups and downs, is presented with courage, humour and tenacity. These are special children who any child can relate to and will draw inspiration and hope from their stories of their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars His No. 1 aim in life is to KISS Lucy..., 16 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Salvadore D'Amato (also known as Sally Tomato) keeps an alphabet or a bunch of Discusting Ditties. He's going to write a poem two letters a week, and his goal is to... KISS Lucy by the time he reaches Z. This is his No. 1 aim in life. After all he's 12... His friend Bones already kissed two girl's already. But first of all Sal decided to learn about girls. So far all he know is that they like to giggle. And they also like spiky hair. At least he thinks. So he puts his siter's facing foam on his hair to attract girls when his sister calls him a yucker. At school something good happened! He was chose for a Library assistant, but not with Lucy. With Harmony. Harmony Hynde the 6th grade nerd. I guess she can't help it. Her braces, and her thick glasses. Also her hair. She's into poetry like Sal. And in a flash they are making Discusting Ditties together in the library. They're good friends now. Well Lucy is better... that's what he thought. But look who's lips are against Sally's... This book really got my nose stuck into it. It wouldn't let you close it. I read it in the bed that my mom had to tell me off. I really got surprised when I knew who's lips are against Sal's! You wouldn't guess! You've gotta read it. It's funny, entertaining, humorous, exciting, Really funny poems, how much more can it offer!? It's perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sally Tomato, 3 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This sounds wierd, and not at all relevent to the book, but I'm a girl, and am also twelve years old. When I picked up this book I had no idea what kind of an insight into what boys think of girls this is. I hope no boy I know thinks that about me or my friends!. Basicly, it's about this boy you has fallen in love with this girl, lucy. his one aim in life is to kiss her. he writes funny poems for every letter of the alphabet.
This is a very good book. And I think it is good for girls to read as well as boys, just like it's the other way round, with 'girls' books.

By A Customer
Sally Tomatos dream is to kiss a girl. He falls in love with Lucy and would do any thing to kiss her. He starts to write a short poem for every letter of the alphabet writing two letters a week. The Secret Life of Sally Tomato is a hilarious book well worth buying. I could read it again and again.
