Product Description

Review
Weldon, chronicler extraordinaire of the war between the sexes (Splitting, 1995, etc.), is back, this time to give us a wickedly funny take on widowhood as an aggrieved woman gleefully avenges herself on both the living and the dead. Alexandra Ludd, a popular, talented actress, is devastated when she learns that husband Ned has died of a heart attack at their country home while she's been in London playing Nora in Ibsen's A Doll's House. Ned, a theater critic, and their four-year old son Sascha are everything to Alexandra - but when she comes down to identify the body, her world is turned upside down. She'd been told that Ned died downstairs and that the body had been discovered by two women: Abbie, an old friend, and Jenny Linden, a costume designer. Accused of being "a very unobservant person," Alexandra now discovers that Ned actually died in bed while he was making love to Abbie, and that he'd also had an affair with Jenny. Brother-in-law Hamish, who's there to help with funeral arrangements, also contributes some surprising comments about Ned. Stunned and outraged, Alexandra broods on what else might be revealed. But even her worst fears are not as bad as what she finds out: Ned not only betrayed her sexually and emotionally, but financially and legally as well. He spread nasty rumors about her, then left their beautiful old house and its lovingly collected contents to Jenny, though Alexandra had paid for most of it. On top of that, their marriage, it turns out, was illegal - Ned never divorced his first wife. Surrounded by treachery, Alexandra decides to concentrate on her "best hopes" of survival and vengeance, and this she does with gusto and panache, stopping at nothing because "there was no such thing as a defeat. If you didn't accept it." Revenge exacted con brio by one of Weldon's most feisty wronged women yet. (Kirkus Reviews)

Product Description
Alexandra is an actress, beautiful and lauded. In the eyes of the world she has everything a woman could want: husband, home, child, income, good looks, good friends, the plaudits of the crowd and the affection of neighbours. However, all fate has to do to bring her down is snip a single strand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Uncomfortable story on betrayal and trust, 3 Feb 2003
By "lexi_wades" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Worst Fears: A Novel (Paperback)
“Moving” is not the right word to describe this study of “worst case scenario”- it has been many years since I’ve read a book that make made blood boil in sympathy quite as much as WF does.
The novel starts off with the main character, Alexandra, in a bad position- her much loved and cherished husband, Ned, has died. Then, much like a who-dunnit, Alexandra pieces the puzzle of what kind of a man Ned really was. And this being a Fay Weldon the answer is simply- not a very nice one.
Of course the story isn’t as simple as that- once Alexandra hits one unpleasant surprise another one is just round the corner. At times the amount of horrendous things that happens to our heroine can seem very theatrically over exaggerated but this fits in very well with Alexandra’s occupation as an actor and Weldon’s ideas on relationships between men and women and women together.
After the first chapter, which seems very ordinary, the Weldon lets the novel zip along scattering a healthy layer amusing, vile and disagreeable (if sometimes slightly clichéd and unrealistic) characters until you are almost in pain for Alexandra. The character of Vilna, especially, seems a rich Eastern European female stereotype with her tastelessness and lack of tact.
This is more a book more likely to be appreciated by an intelligent female readership. Men may be quite insulted by Weldon’s frequent portrayal of them being the villains of the piece. Nevertheless, although WF is a real page-turner it still has its hidden agenda that keeps the book in your mind long after the last paragraph has been read.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Black Death, 9 Sep 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Worst Fears: A Novel (Paperback)
I have only read Praxis which I didn't like, and having bought this book in the charity shop decided it was worth a try. I couldn't put it down.
The characters are all too human and we recognise the types only too well, even if there is an element of characature. Although the plot is unrealistic at times this doesn't matter. It is full of spite and envy mock affection and betrayal on almost everyones part. The subject of death and what those who are left behind have to cope with could be morbid, but it isn't. It is black and very funny. I loved it.
I would thoroughly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revenge is sweet, 29 Mar 2005
This review is from: Worst Fears: A Novel (Paperback)
Fay Weldon's on a roll here, really piling it on the way she can. Check out the final page - yes, the widow does survive, and some.

Confront your worst fear - that you get left holding the baby without the money when the music stops - then go for it.

So what if your friends seem to have spent too much of their lives in bed with your husband? So what if your rival has made everyone believe it was you that was really unfaithful? Best wish everyone!

Side swipe all the home helps and childminders, small fat women, therapists (especially therapists) and lawyers (although best wishing Sheldon Smythe "was not worth it"). Take the artist's revenge, and be more successful than any of them.
