I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw that Elizabeth Woodcraft had written a book. However, curiousity got the better of me and I bought it. Having just finished "Good Bad Woman" I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. As a character, Frankie Richmond is credible and engaging. Refreshingly, Frankie is not sanctimoniously right-on in the way that many lesbian heroines tend to be. The plot was realistic in the way that it dealt with the police, life at the bar and tangled relationships. Anyone working on the radical legal scene will have a fair idea who some of the characters are based on - which is another good reason to order Good Bad Woman..... I would recommend it to any devotee of lesbian crime novels and I will definitely buy Ms Woodcraft's next book.

Two-thirds of the way through this turgid book, I was doing the unthinkable for any right-on dyke - praying for the plods to lock up our heroine. In fact, I really didn't give a damn what happened to ever-so-dull barrister Frankie and her even-more-boring friends. To call them 2-D would be generous. The plot lumbered along, there wasn't the slightest hint of tension, and there wasn't a believable character among the lot of them. If, as another reviewer suggests, it's a 'spot who you know' on the radical lawyer scene, then the book's a bad in-joke which should have been confined to a women's writing group meeting in some trendy north London wine bar. Books like this give lesbian writers a bad name.

You know how it's almost worse when you buy a book and really want to like it, and then find that it is just truly dreadful - well ... I'm sorry, but this novel had a laughably bad storyline and an irritatingly PC, oh, so right-on heroine. Didn't like her, didn't like the book.
