Jemima Carlisle started by having a bad month -- being made redundant, having nowhere to live, worrying about her bankrupt father. Her decision to take up village life, rent a room in the local vicar's house, and work at the local cafe did not work out as the peaceful life she had thought. The village was a centre for stables, with a couple of Grand National favourites -- and Jemima hated horses for a very personal reason. And the enterprise of opening a local bookshop led her straight into village controversy. The target of one group's fatwa, the sharer of the vicar's wife's dark secrets, the piggy in the middle of a tempestuous relationship might have been enough for Jemima, but the arrival of her father with some new money-making scam, and the attempts by various local talents among the jockeys to alter her views on horse-racing, made her realise that one should never jump to conclusions.

About the Author
Christina Jones, brought up in a circus family, wrote short stories for some time before being encouraged to write her first novel, Going the Distance, which became a highly successful WHS Fresh Talent entry. She is married and lives outside Oxford. This is her fourth novel.

This is the first Christina Jones book I've read - and it's really a fun read. I don't know squat about horseracing, but I loved the plot that centers around jockeys and trainers and the like. The cast of characters is fabulous - the hunky vicar and his flaky wife the author, Drew and Maddy (I'm going to order Running the Risk - I have to go back and get their story), the jockeys, the supermodel owner, the small town eccentrics and biddies - but most of all jockey Charley (the serial adulterer) and our smart, charming heroine, Jemima the bookseller. There's quite a few subplots, ranging from race throwing to S & M (!), but they're all tightly wound together and well-written. Of course, you know how the story will end - how it has to end - but the journey there is funny and sweet. Well worth the money - buy this book!

Having read so much rubbish lately it was a relief to read this book. Worth more than five stars. Great characters that developed throughout the book, real dialogue, humour, proper research, and....written in english, no 'gottens' etc., to rip you out of the english countryside into modern day America and disturb the enjoyment of the book. So where do Charlie and Jemima go from here?

If you loved Going The Distance, then this book is the one to buy. It picks up where Going The Distance ends and you finally find out what happened to Drew and Maddy. However, unlike in GTD Drew and Maddy are not the main characters, this time they take a back seat and let some of the minor characters be explored.

The main character in this story is bookworm Jemima Carliles, who has opened up her own book shop in Milton St. John. But seeing as though she detests anything to do with horses it probably wasn't her brightest idea. However, Jemima soon finds her feet in the village and it isn't long before she finds herself sharing secrets with her money laundering landlady, and mixed up in supermodel shenannigans. This book is rich in detail and there are many sub plots floating around that inevitable and cleverly all tie themselves up neatly by the end of the book

A wonderful sequal into the life after Going The Distance. Your curiosity over maddy and Drew is cured and you get to meet a whole array of delightful new characters. Another masterpeice by Christina Jones.
