Terrible though it feels to have to pan something by the masterful Robert Silverberg (his 'Dying Aside' alone is a great book, let alone the rest of his output), this 6th volume of his collected short stories is staggeringly disappointing. A collection of polished, professional and ultimately empty tales with no real sting or life. They vary between great ideas left flat and two-dimensional, and old ideas given no new life. In several of the introductory pieces, Silverberg mentions that he is no longer as interested in short stories as he once was, and this really shows in the stories themselves. The work of a great writer whose heart is no longer in it.

I think that the gift of Bob Silverberg is to construct convincing alternative-hystories.The charachter of the would-be heir of the throne in the alternative history's kingdom of Songhay is remarkable.The admixture of civilization and savagery is exquisitely detailed.The vagaries of the custom in a purely imaginary hystory rarely convincing.I've loved the final scenes of the eponym story.And another story,the one about the guardian of the ancient temple...masterful!
