Product Description
Synopsis
It was the most incredible thing: a corpse sitting in an empty hansom cab - and it wasn't just any corpse, but the body of a peer of the realm. To Inspector Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, it was sheer lunacy. Whoever would want to unearth a decently buried old chap like Lord Augustus Fitzroy-Hammond? The doctor insisted that the death had been natural. But there was certainly nothing natural about any of this as far as the police were concerned. And Inspector Pitt was determined to unearth the truth - even if the digging could kill him...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another outing for Thomas and Charlotte, 29 Mar 2001

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The real strength of Anne Perry's Thomas Pitt novels are the sympathetic characters she draws and the way she makes the social history of the Victorian Era palatable for consumption by mixing it with a big dose of mystery. The crime plots themselves are not always that wonderful, but the vividness of the rest of the books draws you along to the end nicely. Pitt and his wife Charlotte's relationship is well drawn and I enjoy the fact that Perry uses it to show the social structures of the day and the class barriers in place. They are intelligently written as a whole although this was one of the weaker plotted offerings in the series.
