Product Description

Product Description

The fifth volume in the fast-selling series of high-tech, high-action thrillers created by Tom Clancy and Steve Pieczenik. Tom Clancy's Op-Centre, the series of international thrillers centred on the National Crisis Management Centre in Washington, is now firmly established as a bestselling phenomenon -- a must for technothriller fans around the world. The previous volume in the series, Acts of War, was one of the fastest-selling thrillers of 1997. Now that remarkable record is set to continue, with a spectacular new story -- Balance of Power. Spain is a nation poised to suffer its worst internal strife in a thousand years. Certain well-placed Spanish diplomats sense it. Op-Centre's intelligence corroborates it. All the United States and Spain have to do is find a way to avert it. Before they can, an Op-Centre representative is assassinated in Madrid on her way to a top-secret diplomatic meeting. Now all fears are confirmed. Someone very powerful wants another Spanish civil war -- no matter what the cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not shameless, simply brilliant., 8 Sep 2003

I found this page-turner simply irresistable. Clancy narrates with effortless skill, the trials of the Op Centre. It's a work of fiction- and a great one at that.

If you like Clancy, then this a great title. Well worth the admission fee.

1.0 out of 5 stars shameful, 9 Aug 2000
By RAMON (Santander, SPAIN) - See all my reviews
Tom Clancy should read a bit about the countries he writes about. All the plot is so ridiculous that it makes me blush. The Spain he describes must be the outcome of an ill digested resume of international news delivered by CNN. Of course no part of this book has any connection with actual life, because actual life in Spain is something else. I am terrified to know that Mr Clancy is a Pentagon adviser, if his knowledge about countries, peoples, problems and ideas are so shallow and basic. He should remember that his own country is one of the most dangerous in the world. One should expect more from a pupil of the jesuits.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother, 6 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Deals with terrorism -unbeliably naive- and a plot to take over Spain. I would only recomend this book if you were: A) Uncritical fans of Tom Clancy's series. (Not of Tom Clancy's) or B) Reluctant to visit or read or hear anything about real Spain in the near future. Just to give you an example of the problems with the book realism let me say that the Spanish version had to be modified by the translators in order not to be an object of ridicule. I'm sorry to say that Mr Clancy's/ helpers/documentalists/ whatever had a very limited knowledge of the country and its political and social situation. I shudder to think that they get their warped views from anybody in State. I give it a star. After all, it is a book of fiction. Reminded me of those words at the end of movies."None of these events..."
