3.0 out of 5 stars Cheesy but good, 14 Nov 2002
By strozzapreti "strozzapreti" (Bradford, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
A rich and successful LA psychiatrist is unnerved when a brilliant new patient calmly describes his compulsion of manipulating complete strangers into committing acts of evil on their loved ones. The psychiatrist himself is soon under the new patient’s spell, increasingly unable to distinguish reality from fantasy while plunging headlong towards disaster. The Dark is the latest in a long line of provocative tales from a master storyteller. A cheesy opening and no-nonsense text lulls the reader into a false sense of superiority only dispelled when one realises the whole book has been consumed in one sitting! Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unoriginal yet violent addictive, 19 Jun 2002
Although "The Dark" doesn't break any new ground where storylines are concerned, its breakneck pace and laconic style makes it an utterly riveting and enjoyable read. I devoured it in one whole sitting, despite the fact that the weak and clichéd plot left a rather sour taste in my mouth. Like all good things trashy, this book hooks you from the word go, and keeps you nailed to your chair. It's probably the type of book that once you've read it, you'll toss aside and never read again. Nevertheless, whilst reading it you forget to either eat, drink or socialise. While it rushes through you like a river of electricity, it leaves you dead to the world. It's like Big Brother 3: while being "been-there-done-that", it just thoroughly gets under your skin.

'The Dark' is Neiderman's story of how one man's persuasiveness pushes others to commit evil deeds. There are some strong similarities to his earlier work, 'The Devil's Advocate',... Read more
