Product Description

Review

'A fast-paced, edge-of-the-seat yarn about the world of international espionage. The book is as informative as it is gripping. Mr Easterman writes with a skill and panache that leave most other practitioners of the genre standing.' Newcastle upon Tyne Journal Reviews for Daniel Easterman's previous novels: 'There are shades of Graham Greene in the climate of brooding terror which Easterman conjures so very nicely.' Independent 'The storyline is strong and bold, with its unavoidable, occasional harshness tempered by the delicacy of the romance that unfolds.' Sunday Times 'Ingenious! splendidly gruesome set-pieces.' Evening Standard

Product Description

A fast-paced thriller combining the forces of fear, love, heroism and extraordinary adventure. 'In northern India a twelve-year-old boy is being interrogated by three intelligence officers. A tape-recorder turns; there is no air conditioning, no fan. Everyone but the boy is sweating: his tale is so incredible that none dares believe it.' The child appears to be the reincarnation of a dead British secret agent: his knowledge is that of a grown man, Matthew Hyde, who disappeared in China's Sinkiang province whilst investigating the links between Iraqi nuclear scientists and Chinese research bases. Somewhere -- and only the boy knows the secret -- there is a massive conspiracy to supply Saddam Hussein with a weapon against which there can be no defence. From the corridors of power in London to the lost cities of the Taklamakan desert, this crackling novel encompasses fear, love, heroism and extraordinary adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 23 April 2002

(REAL NAME)
If you know the earlier novels by Easterman you will definitely miss the mysterious elements that are so typical of them. The promising title suggests the novel will go this way too, but in the end it does not. For the aficionado this might be somewhat disappointing. And the characters are a little bit exaggerated. The story is perhaps comparable to James Bond novels, the main character owes a lot to Bond, except for his relationship to women where he is much more conservative than 007. But the characters all have a touch of caricatures and are a bit more than realistic. The protagonist is too good, too lucky, too strong and too clever. His girl friend is too modern if you consider the surroundings she grew up in. Calum, the Scotsman, is too clever and too stupid at the same time. But nevertheless, the novel is a well written thriller, with a remarkable plot and exciting action. For all its length, it is never boring, it is fast and gripping. A very good read!

2.0 out of 5 stars James bond on steroids, 14 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This book started really well. Then it completely lost it. The idea that China would build Iraq a superweapon is certainly plausible. The idea that members of the British Security services would be involved for profit is too far fetched. The author piles on the action; our hero is placed in impossible situations yet always triumphs. The underlying romance behind the whole plot spoils the story even more with the hero and heroine calling each other darling. After half way I just wanted to know how it would pan out and was even more dissapointed with the ending.
