Product Description

Synopsis

The World River carries many secrets. And it is a place where the truth can kill. Come to the world of the River. A world distant in time and space, where the pace of life is counted by the tides of the great River -- and where swift, dark currents flow beneath a placid surface. Pamra Don is a young woman scarred by her mother's death and lured to a priesthood where truth must be hidden from the faithful. Thrasne is a young boatman who trades from town to town, free from the iron control of the Towers of the Awakeners. These two, both by accident and design, are about to discover many truths. Truths about the Thraish, a native race whose savage god has promised Pamra's people a world of willing prey. Pamra becomes the visionary leader of a great pilgrimage to the Protector of Mna. But the Thraish at last take note of Pamra Don and her crusade...and their vengeance will be swift.

5.0 out of 5 stars A winding tale that doesn't really take you anywhere., 30 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This is a novel that brilliantly shows the stupidity of the human race and the herd instinct of our rather backward species. Its' historical context is lost in the myriad of characters who each do not very much to move the book along.

There is of course Tepper's usual assortment of modern day saints to save those who will be saved, a chosen people ruled by a woman (with the customary aversion to young warrior males) and a hero of sorts who to be frank is rather lacklustre.

Pamra Don, the anti-heroine provides a focus in the novel on which to vent your frustration but this rather weak tale cannot be saved by such a small point.

The novel drags and in the end all I wanted was to see some of Tepper's aggression and passion with all of its' heavyhandedness to shake me awake.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what you think..., 4 Jan 2001

Tepper takes a temporary turn away from feminism with The Awakeners (yay), but the ecological slant is still there. The Awakeners has a very large cast of characters, and although she does her usual brilliant job of making them all individuals, occasionally I really just wished there were only two or three main characters to follow.

The book starts out slowly, but is solid throughout. I didn't care for Pamra Don, but I suppose that's part of the point of the book - and to explain more would be to give away the plot, so I won't.

I recommend The Awakeners for being a good read, with very good points to make while still being enjoyable. Overall, though, I still prefer her later works such as Six Moon Dance and The Family Tree.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not to Tepper's usual standard, 30 Nov 2000
By A Customer
The plot lines jump around rather too much and when combined with the rather thin characterisation this tends to produce a book which it is difficult to stay with.

The historical basis of the story does eventually become clear which readers in the UK may well find insulting.

Joan (whoops! Pamra) is quite uninteresting and probably would have been better off staying with the Mendicants, but of such things legends are not made.
