Review
'The essence of Donaldson's artistry -- and the key to his success -- is his ability to construct narrative crescendos that build and build and keep on building, unremittingly, until they have reached a pitch which no composer of texts has ever attained before.' Interzone 'Fascinating... the best thing Donaldson has ever done.' Oxford Times

Product Description
A new-cover reissue of the second book in the bestselling five-volume sf series created by the world-famous author of the Thomas Covenant chronicles -- and acclaimed as the 'best work of his career'. In The Real Story, Morn Hyland had survived a terrible ordeal at the hands of one space pirate, only to find herself trapped in the ship of another, surrounded by hostile, unfriendly faces. Nick Succorso had rescued her, but for what purpose? He and his crew were all illegals, and she was a cop -- a cop with gap-sickness. Just having her on board would put all their lives at risk. But Nick knew that Morn possessed something that could be of value to them all -- and he had every intention of exploiting it. As she struggled to recover from her shattering experiences, Morn would hear increasingly shocking tales of corruption in the UMCP, and even more alarming rumours of a shadowy alien life force -- the Amnion -- with their all-consuming mutagens. All too soon, on the long and hazardous voyage to forbidden space, the bizarre stories would become horrifying reality...

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent and insightful book, another classic!, 16 Mar 2000

Stepehn Donaldsons gap series provides for through provoking and entertaining reading. The characters are well developed allowing the reader to understand and relate to the events taking place. The gap into vision provides an excellent coninutation from the first book allowing the story to unfold in increasingly unpredicatable ways. I could not put the books down as I moved from the first to the fifth, turely excellent Sci-fi adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars After this the rest of the books were a neccesity, 3 May 2001

what can I say.... I was introduced to stephen donaldson through the mordants need series and although slightly dissapointed, still found them easy reading book's with a difference. They however, were only an insight to this series. with amazing characters and unbelieveable settings donaldson delves deeper into his world of piracy, mistrust, conspiracy, phisical and mental torture and anguish. His imaginative portrayal of characters such as Nick succorso and Morn hyland drag you in with him.... I could not put this or any of the gap series down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, dangerous and absolutely rivetting, 28 Nov 2006

(REAL NAME)
This is a wonderful second book in my favourite series of books.

The first book sets the scene and the second slowly starts to peel away the top layers of this many-layered delight. You will struggle to find a character to like and if you're anything like me you'll find yourself asking "Who's the good guy? Who am I rooting for here?"

Again this is a short-ish book and opens the doors for the following three which are stupendous. The story alone is worth five stars but even the short descriptions of some of the science (the gap drive for example) are incredibly well researched and innovative.

Just buy the lot, take a week off, sink in to your favourite armchair and wallow in these wonderful books.
