4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating - good read, 7 Mar 2004
By A Customer
I thoroughly enoyed this book. It makes an interesting read with regard to the training, and operations of the 14th Det and the added slant of a female being accepted in to a mainly male environment.

The insight into Sarah's own life and the ups/downs of personal and professional are absorbing. It's not all glamour and big guns and she conveys that in this book.

All in all, no matter who you "support" or believe it's hard not to be impressed by the determination and spirit these people have.

I'd agree that at times the personal stuff outweighs the rest but only in places and it didn't detract overall from what is an enjoyable read. If you like SAS books and aren't too sure about 14th Det - this book will still grab you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and surprising, 3 May 2002
By A Customer
I didn't expect to enjoy this, but was pleasantly surprised. I'm an army oficer and a female and i can understand why she volunteered for such a unit. It;s useful to get a private insight into a job for which one could volunteer - maybe i will now. James rennie's 'Operators' account gives more detail but I trust a female view more, to be frank. Sorry guys!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not someone to mess around with, 2 April 2002

Reading Sarah Ford's autobiography, I'm well convinced she's not someone I would want to meet in a dark alley. Her description of 14th Intelligence Company ("the Det") is very interesting--but it helps if you have read other accounts of the Det or Peter Taylor's description of their origins in his book "The Brits." Ford uses a lot of jargon--if you've read the slate of SAS/SBS/Det autobiographies out there, you'll be okay. My one complaint with Ford's account is that towards the end, she veers away from describing operations and begins over-detailing her personal and love life amongst the various SAS members she comes into contact with. Fair enough, but the book begins to lose focus. Still, that doesn't detract from a quick and good read.
