Product Description

Product Description

The nation-state of Austria has only existed since the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg empire in 1918. This work examines the Austrian people's struggle to find their identity against the pull of multi-national Danubian traditions on one hand and racial German ties on the other. It also describes the role the Austrians have to play in the modern world and how they have come to terms with their recent past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read all about Austria! This book is all you need., 14 Aug 1999
By A Customer
A whole life's experience of Austria has gone into this wonderful book. Making good use of his immense knowledge af the country and its people, Brook-Shephard takes you gently by the hand and leads you through the often complex history of Austria, - warts and all. On the last page you'll know as much about Austria as one can from a book. A pleasure to read too. Can't wait to go back...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, 6 Feb 2006

I bought this book mainly because I wanted to read up on Austrian history before moving to Austria for a few months. I never expected the book to be so informative and easy-to-read. The author writes in a narrative style, including lots of anecdotes and interesting pieces of information that would not perhaps be included in other history books. I happily read whole chunks of the book at a time without noticing time passing by. If you want to know about Austria and her history, buy this book!
