5.0 out of 5 stars a great work, 5 April 2008
By Janie "Jane O'Neill" (Brighton, England) - See all my reviews
It saddens me that some Catholics find this book unchristian - the point is that this book reaches the spiritual truth that is at the heart of every religious tradition. It goes beyond demonination and beyond concepts and beliefs - right to the essence of reality itself, where is nothing but pure consciousness and well-being. Anthony DeMello was a spiritual teacher who just happened to express himself in a Christian framework. But really there's little difference between him and teachers like Eckhart Tolle or Krishnamurti. In fact I came across this book on the recommended reading list on Eckhart Tolle's website, where I have found other books such as Steve Taylor's wonderful Waking From Sleep Waking from Sleep: Why Awakening Experiences Occur and How to Make Them Permanent

5.0 out of 5 stars The light switch to a better life..., 26 Aug 2009
By J. Watters (Northamtonshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Though at times his style is quirky, his message is simple, clear and wonderful.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me this book had a profound and instant impact. It's a little like I found the light switch, and with it came both sight and peace of mind.

I had first read Eckhart Tolle, "The Power of Now"; which was an interesting book and one that somewhat ironically started me "thinking." Though I have to confess, I found Eckart Tolle a little cold, pseudo intellectual and if I'm honest tedious in parts.

Awareness, in contrast is lightness. It's filled with the man, his anecdotes, frank reflections and easy lessons that are immediately actionable. Above all else it's a very human book, by a very real, loving and beautifully vulnerable man.

I would urge you to read it. I only hope that I can be wise enough to keep putting into action what Tony has offered me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plain and Simple, 3 April 2009
A.De Mello takes the compications out of spirituality, looking at it all from a pshycological perspective, he says that awareness is the way to spiritual enlightenment. Continuously throughout the book he keeps repeating the words (Awareness, Awareness, Awareness) as the basic underlying concept of all religions. He can be down to earth and humorous and also serious when he needs to be. Overall this book clears up what awareness really is and what it means to be spiritually aware. A good companion for this book would be The Awakening of Spiritual Awareness which carries a message that brings the awareness process to life. Both are all about simplifying the enlightenment process, getting back to brass tacks and taking a good look at the mind to uncover what is really important!
