2.0 out of 5 stars A good story but lacking depth, 22 Sep 2001
By jmtenneson@aol.com (New Mexico, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ramage and the Dido (Paperback)
It has been a few years since I read a Ramage novel and in the interval I have read all of Patrick O'Brian's wonderful books. Perhaps that is why this book seemed to be a flimsy tale lacking depth. Ramage seems to breeze through his assignments barely missing a beat. I was very disapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story, 22 Dec 2001
By smithjohn@clara.co.uk (Gateshead, Tyne and Wear) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ramage and the Dido (Paperback)
I find that most books by Dudley Pope are very well put together and very explicit in the way he explains the in's and out's of the Royal Navy in those days. The history aspect is very enjoyable and all told the story line I find very relaxing and readable. The story line can be guessed at but still does not detract from the good quality writing from the pen of Dudly Pope. I found this story line one that I wanted to keep on reading and not put down. The Ramage series of books are all very good.
I have tried reading Patrick O'Brian books but find them very difficult to relax with. I'll stick with the Ramage Series for the present.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ramage sails on - into the unknown, 11 Oct 2009
By Stefan Rode "Steven" (Denmark) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ramage is, unexpectedly, unless you are a reader, promoted to command a 74. And he is of course (??) allowed to bring the entire crew of the Calypso with him. Well, it works in the narrative, although I believe something like that never actually happened. For the rest, it is a typical Ramage-adventure, with gales, brave seamen, and Ramage buckling all the swash imaginable. Perhaps not the best of Mr. Pope's efforts, not the worst - and if you like the series, as I do, that is in fact enough. In the end, it turned out to be the last of the series, which is too bad, although - truth be told - perhaps even Mr. Pope's huge fund of ideas was to some extend exhausted.
