Product Description

Pretty, young Anne came to London for adventure. She found it immediately - on the platform of Hyde Park Corner tube station, where a thin man, reeking of mothballs, lost his balance and was electrocuted on the rails. The Scotland Yard verdict was accidental death. But Anne was not satisfied.

About the Author

Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and became, quite simply, the best-selling novelist in history. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, written towards the end of the First World War, introduced us to Hercule Poirot, who was to become the most popular detective in crime fiction since Sherlock Holmes. She is known throughout the world as the Queen of Crime. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in over 100 foreign countries. She is the author of 80 crime novels and short story collections, 19 plays, and six novels under the name of Mary Westmacott. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ripping yarn, 16 Jun 2004
By L O'connor (richmond, surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Anne Beddingfield has lived her whole life in a small village with her father, an anthropologist who cares only for Paleolithic Man. Anne longs for romance and adventure, and envies their maid, who "walked out" with an asssortment of young men. Then Anne's father dies suddenly, and Anne gets a chance at adventure when she witnesses the accidental death of a man at a london tube station. Anne has reason to believe that this death is connected to the murder of a woman at a house in Marlow, but the police aren't interested in her theories. The enterprising Anne beleives that a ship bound for South Africa holds the answer to the mystery, and embarks without delay. There are a variety of colourful and eccentric characters on board ship, the charming Suzanne Blair, enigmatic Coloonel Race, creepy clergyman Chichester, delightful Sir Eustace Pedler, but some or all of these people may not be what they seem. A lot of exciting things happen to Anne on board ship, not the least exciting being the night when a glamorous wounded stranger takes refuge in her cabin. Who is he, and what does he want? Exciting things continue to happen when they arrive in South Africa, and Anne gets all the adventure and romance she has ever dreamed about, and more. Anne is a delightful heroine, adventurous and resourceful and humorous, and the supporting characters are equally charming. An exciting story, interesting characters, adventure, humour, and romance, what more could you want from a book?

this is one of the best agatha christie books i have ever read. she steers away from her classic'whodunnit' and it works very well! the story has romance,(which is'nt very common for agatha but she does it well!)and mystery. i belive that this book is a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Man in the Brown Suit, 23 Sep 2005
By Lilly Hubert (California) - See all my reviews
I love this book- read my paperback version over & over-it's silly, incredibly old-world adventure romance but a surprise every time I read it. However, the the article which linked me to your UK site lead me to believe I could buy a HARDBACK re-vision of this novel and when I got to your site saw only the paperback for sale.

2.0 out of 5 stars Emilia Fox is not much of a reader
She's OK as Anne, but just adopts a squeakier tone for Suzanne, and is utterly hopeless at playing men. She can't go deeper, so she just goes hoarser. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I really enjoyed this book: it is without the usual Agatha Christie's characters Poirot or Miss Marple, but this is not a problem. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Not one of her best
Far from being one of Christie's best. Rather than the usual "whodunnit", it's one of her so-called "thrillers", with the usual plot about a "modern"... Read more
