5.0 out of 5 stars Hammond Innes's best, 14 Dec 2002

This review is from: The Angry Mountain (Paperback)
This is my favourite thriller from Hammond Innes, an adventure writer right up there with the likes of Alistair MacLean and a whole lot better than the current crop of writers led by the totally unimaginative Tom Clancey. This is not literature but Hammond Innes never meant it to be, it is however a great example a adventure fiction. This is the book that really got me interested in reading when I was young and I will never forget it for that. This particular story is set in Naples just after WWII when mount Vesuvius is about to erupt, and does erupt in the climax of the book. It is a story that takes you back to the seemingly glamourous time of 1950s Europe. Hammond Innes puts together a tightly written and constantly entertaining story about a man with his own demons who fights them and the bad guys! A thoroughly entertaining read.
