This review is from: Lion Triumphant (Paperback)
The second in Philippa Carr's (aka Jean Plaidy, Victoria Holt) "Daughters of England" series, "Lion Triumphant" spans the time from the coronation of Queen Elizabeth I to the Armada. Told by Catherine, Damask Farland's daughter, it is a complex tale which mixes heady bodice-ripping action (literally so in one scene!) with some wise reflections on human relationships (as the main characters get older it is sometimes painfully poignant). Catherine is both attracted and repelled by lusty seaman Jake Pennlyon on sight (which is usually the way with Plaidy's heroines!). Jake insists she is going to be his wife and the mother of his sons, Catherine isn't so sure. Before the marriage can take place though Catherine, and her beautiful half-sister Honey, are abducted and taken to the Canary Islands, as part of a bizarre revenge plot by Don Felipe Gonzales, whose fragile young wife, Isabella, was impregnated by Jake some time before. Gradually though Felipe develops tender feelings for Catherine, and they marry and have a son. And then suddenly Jake is back on the scene ... with a vengeance.

Bodice-rippers don't come much more full-bodied than this. It is strong on atmosphere, and sometimes the action becomes unbearable, as you get impatient to know what's going to happen next. "Lion Triumphant" is a great favourite amongst Philippa Carr fans, and it's easy to see why. The intrigues of the Elizabethan era are vividly brought to life, and the scenes concerning the Spanish Inquisition are chilling. Recommended reading.
