5.0 out of 5 stars Ramages diamond, 22 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Ramage's Diamond (Paperback)
Ramage's Diamond is one of the best books in the Ramage set. It begins with Ramage attaining his long awaited promotion to post captain, the very honourable Lord St Vincent himself informs him of this! If that's not enough he immediately gets a frigate which is now mastered by, no other than, Soutwick.. Ramage finds out that taking over from a drunken, lunatic of a captain is not easy and follows orders to sail to the West Indies. En route he and Southwick, as well as the new first lieutenant, manage to train the slack, nearly mutinous, crew. This training was to come in helpful as nearly straight after they get to the West Indies they see action, capturing a few frigates and schooners as well as some merchant men during the few months they was there.

This is another magnificent book by Dudley Pope, it is well written and is one of the best for far. Pope always gives clear descriptions of every day life and action whether it be on board on the ship or on dry land. This book is also a major turning point in the Ramage series, that's why I recommend that you read it without further delay! .

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book in series!, 31 Jan 2007
By Dr J (Salem, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This is installment 7 of Dudley Pope's Nicholas Ramage series. It is heads and tails above #6. Ramage is the quintessential hero. The reader knows that Ramage will succeed in his endeavors. The fun part about these novels is finding out HOW Ramage will succeed. He has way too much success--almost Deus ex machina. The action and episodes in this novel are all interesting. The battles are described well and keep the reader's interest. As usual, though, there is really too much detail when Ramage has his men hoist some guns onto the top of a mountain. Pope, just let the guys get the guns up and start shooting at the Frogs! For that, this book get 4 and a half stars. But the rest of the book is great fun. I might add that the BBC chose the wrong story for its naval hero. The Ramage stories are much more interesting than Hornblower.
