Product Description

Book Description

Mr Kipps was a simple man. An assistant in Shalford's drapery establishment, his was a straightforward, uncomplicated life. But to this, he added layer upon layer of pretence until he had become an entirely new creation - and one that could rightly rise to the next social echelon. Unfortunately for Kipps, the people he meets there are also mere social constructs, yet rather more sophisticated than he and it is all he can do prevent his mask from sliding. Until the day he meets Ann Pornick and discovers the real priorities in life. AUTHBIO: Known as the 'Father of Science Fiction', H G Wells was responsible for an entirely new genre of writing. It was his bold, daring and hugely innovative books that first introduced readers to the concepts of time travel, invisibility, genetic experimentation and interstellar invasion - ideas that have gone on to inspire future generations and given rise to the entire science fiction industry. Disturbingly accurate in his prophetic writing, H G Wells was also the author of a number of key sociological and historical works. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

HG Wells was born in Bromley, Kent in 1866. After working as a draper's apprentice and pupil-teacher, he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in 1884, studying under T H Huxley. He was awarded a first-class honours degree in biology and resumed teaching but had to retire after a kick from an ill-natured pupil afflicted his kidneys. He worked in poverty in London as a crammer while experimenting in journalism and stories. It was with The Time Machine (1895) that he had his real breakthrough. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Joy to Read, 30 April 1999
By A Customer
This, subtitled "The Story of a Simple Soul" is a wonderful and wildly satirical novel, yet it's always under control and written with gentleness of spirit. It's paradoxically sweet and nasty at the same time, and indeed is paradoxical in all sorts of ways. It must have seemed a huge breakthrough when it first came out. Indeed it's full of what today would be considered extremely clever postmodern tricks. It's written with immense humour and lightness of touch yet it's extremely serious and sad. Kipps is an amazing dunce who is tossed about by fate and who transforms himself in a logical progression throughout the book but never really changes. The book is much meaner and nastier than the movie version (of the thirties), which seems gloriously sentimental in retrospect. A joy to read.
