5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping reading and an enriching experience!, 12 April 1999
By A Customer
Possibly the first modern classic fantasy novel, Tolkien's the Hobbit can be enjoyed by all readers young and old regardless of literary taste. Intuitive characterizations, a gripping story and a 1st class narrative take the reader through an adventure seldom matched or surpassed by any storyteller. Truly a modern classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hobbit: one of this century's most significant books, 15 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This Hobbit is a true masterpiece of modern mythology. Serving both as a prequel to the epic Lord of the Rings and a wonderful story in it's own right, it will keep you absolutely gripped from cover to cover. The eponymous hero Bilbo Baggins, follows the timeless hero's path that has been trod many times before and since by character's ranging from Odysseus to Luke Skywalker. The main delight of this book is to watch Bilbo's character progress from a somewhat cowardly homebody to a master thief. Packed full of brilliantly idiosyncratic characters and sweepingly fantastical landscapes, The Hobbit (along with Lord of the Rings) is THE original work of modern fantasy suitable for young and old alike. Everyone should read this book!
