Product Description

Review
Muslims and Copts each claim the site of the fig tree as sacred, the railway from Cairo is planned to go through it, so who arranged the body there, and why? Unflappable Captain Owen the Mamur Zapt has enough on his plate already: Nationalist agitation, oily Pashas, French sensitivity, a temperamental lady friend. The tenth in this blissful series. (Kirkus UK)

Product Description
Why was the body put on the line? Did someone want to halt the progress of the New Electric Railway out from Cairo to the "City of Pleasure" being built in the suburbs? Old Egypt is pitted against New and in the middle is the Mamur Zapt, British head of Cairo's Secret Police.

4.0 out of 5 stars An ironic yet thrilling novel in former colonial Egypt, 19 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Michael Pearce is the well known author of several historic crime novels set in Egypt at the beginning of the last century. Mr. Owen, the Mamur Zapt (i.e.Chief of the Egyptian Secret Service) is an intelligent, witty investigator who always manages to get his answers while everybody else thinks he is rather clueless. This novel is as recommendable as all the other Mamur Zapt novels and consists of marvellous ironic dialogues which strongly remind the reader of Eric Ambler or Agatha Christie. Read it!
