Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Acclaimed writer and editor Robert Silverberg gathered 11 of the finest writers in fantasy to contribute to this collection of short novels. Each of the writers was asked to write a new story based on one of his or her most famous series, and the results are wonderful. From Stephen King's opening piece set in his popular Gunslinger universe to Robert Jordan's early look at his famed Wheel of Time saga, each of these stories is exceptionally well written and universally well told. The authors here include King, Jordan, and Silverberg himself, as well as Terry and Lyn Pratchett, Terry Goodkind, Orson Scott Card, Ursula K. Le Guin, Tad Williams, George R.R. Martin, Anne McCaffrey, and Raymond E. Feist. This is not only a great book in and of itself, but it's also a perfect way for fantasy fans to find new novels and authors to add to their "to read" lists. -- Craig E. Engler

5.0 out of 5 stars The bible for all fantasylovers!!!, 11 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Just when you think you've said goodbye to your favorite persons in your favorite worlds a book like this comes along and bring them all back to life! This is the kind of book you want to read slowly and enjoy every sentence and word, because it brings you from the High Keep of Erkynland through Discworld to the meeting of Lan and Moiraine after a visit to the thrilling wizards of Earthsea - just to list a few of the 11 faboules worlds. This book brought me out of my winterdepression and far, far away from the cold country I live in, it is a MUST READ and the best book I've bought for a very long time! I hope not this is the last book of its kind, but the first of many to come and I can only thank the writers for making such a wonderfull book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Legends: a must., 21 Sep 2009
By Fernando Pereira Garcia (Seville, Spain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Eleven short stories belonging to eleven differents worlds.
If you don't know these worlds yet, there's a brief introduction before every tale that show you these places, and let you understand the main tale.
If you already know them, you will enjoy even better, because you will appreciate the stories with more details.

Cannot say what is better, if the joy of a new story of the world you know and already like, or the wonderful feeling that you've found another world to discover, and that you've got three or more books that talk about it.

Great book, both to read fast or slow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 17 Jan 2009
I have had this book in my library for quite some time and only recently have had time to dip into it.

The line-up of authors is amazing! If you are looking to introduce someone to the fantasy genre, this one would be a good one to get. Having said that, give them a warning that the styles of writing vary a great deal and if they don't like one story, not to give up on the next.

I am saying that because I read Stephen King's contribution last night and didn't like it very much as it is quite surreal in a way. On the other hand, the previous evening, I read GRRM's 'Hedge Knight' and thought it absolutely outstanding, just the sort of fantasy story that I love and if I didn't already own all the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' books, I would be out there getting them now. Other favourite contributions are by Feist, McCaffrey, Jordan and Pratchett, to name but a few.

Several of these stories have now been published independently and you'll save yourself a lot of money by getting them all together in this one book. The original full edition of Legends is now only available from amazon sellers as it has now been split into Volumes 1&2. Not to be confused with 'Legends II' which is a second collection of another eleven stories. Don't worry about using amazon sellers;it is just as easy as ordering from amazon and I have had excellent service from them many times.

My star ratings are the result of the following breakdown:
How difficult was it to put the book down: extremely difficult = five stars
Would I buy the hardcover of this one: yes = five stars
Am I likely to read it again: definitely= five stars
