2.0 out of 5 stars Excellent plotting but badly written, 8 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Rough Justice (Paperback)
I know someone who got to page 56 and packed this in. One of cover reviews hails her as the 'female John Grisham'. So I was curious and tried it out. I finished it; and finished it impressed with the plotting. Not until the end do you discover the reason for the crime and the total number of people involved. I even had a laugh at the description of the associates making their way through the snow storm. The associates' characters were a bit slow to develop, but after a few chapters I did end up caring what happened to them - very much. My main gripe with this book is the writing. People swear. If there wasn't any swearing in the dialogue I'd be surprised. When writing thoughts from one character's point of view I'd expect the occasional sprinkle of swearing. This is a crime novel after all!. But this book is littered with expletives, including, and too frequently from the writer's own narrative. What is said about spoken language holds here. If you swear all the time it shows a lack of command of the English language. So please Ms Scottoline, write your books but hold on the expletives. Ask yourself if another word would give the sentence better meaning. Worth a read for the plot but don't expect a literary event.
