I finished "Blue Mars" wishing, as one often does at the end of a good book, for more of the same. "Antarctica" offers more of Kim Stanley Robinson's attention to detail while skillfully weaving a story around people joined by their love of an impossible environment. This is not a book about the conquest of Antarctica or really it's despoilment. More a review of the varying attitudes that bring people to a hostile environment for whatever reasons. As usual the characters are utterly believable, the three way relationship between Val, X and Wade is evolving right up to the end. All in all an excellent book which left me wanting to experience the hardship, beauty and peace that the Antarctic has to offer.
