Imperial Rome is the ultimate source of their troubles, Rome and Caesar ... so the action shifts there, with much sophistication, banter, decadence, political intrigue, and rapid-action arena scenes with Dryas unwillingly fighting deadly beasts to amuse Caesar, Cleopatra, Antony and others, while Mananiel finds a most unexpected lover. Meanwhile we have mystical glimpses of a realm outside time, a wood beyond the world which each major character briefly visits. In a prophecy unrecorded by history, the Goddess herself speaks through Dryas to tell Caesar his options in this year of 44 BC, and there's considerable irony in his choice. Synopsis

Continues the richly atmospheric historical fantasy trilogy about shapeshifters, this time set in Britain and Gaul during the glory years of Caesar's Roman empire. The second in this richly atmospheric trilogy tells the story of Maeniel, hundreds of years before his appearance in The Silver Wolf. Maeniel, a wolf possessed of a unique gift, is drawn into the lives of men when he is captured by a magnificent Celtic warrior, Dryas, who thirsts for revenge against Julius Caesar. Maeniel matches wits with her, but she seduces him while in his man-form within a circle of standing stones. Too late, he realizes that he cannot return to his wolf form so long as he is a prisoner of her ancient magic. As the druids of Gaul force him to become their instrument of revenge, Maeniel must draw upon all his primitive powers to find a way to reach the most powerful, and dangerous, man in the world. But his escape will depend on the dangerous talents of Dryas, as she fights for her life, and those of their co-conspirators, in the gladiator's arena. By far, this is the most specatcular read I have ever come across. The half-wolf/half-man, Maeniel; not only has to battle with the strange race of creatures he is forced into (i.e. Humanity), but he has to fight the war raging inside his own mind as he is torn between his natural home of the forests and woodland of Druidic Gaul, and the new and exciting world of the Humans he feels so compelled to explore.

Borchardt's attention to detail is flawless, and her descriptions will take you deep into her World, the World of ancient Rome.

The Druids worry as the forces of Julius Caesar's troops overwhelm the island. Desperate to save their heritage, Archdruid Mir sends assassin Dryas to kill Caesar. However, before departing for Rome, Dryas must murder the werewolf Maeniel who has brutalized the Celts and the Romans when his beloved Imona vanished after a battle. Maeniel searches for his missing lover who taught him to embrace his human side as much as his wolf side.

However, instead of slaying the shapechanger, Dyras becomes a partner to Maeniel. Traveling together, they journey onto the continent, heading to the Imperial City for a final confrontation with Caesar on the Ides of March.

NIGHT OF THE WOLF is an interesting dark mixing of history, Shakespeare, and fantasy into an entertaining tale. The story line is filled with action, but slows down when Dryas provides soliloquies on a woman's right to hold any job such as soldier and assassin. References from the Bard add to the tale, yet the characters of Caesar and his wife seem stale. Maeniel makes the novel as his dual personality fight in a way that modern psychiatry would enjoy observing. That split personality ever warring with itself turns the NIGHT OF THE WOLF into a fun to read historical fantasy.

Alice Borchardt shared a childhood of storytelling with her sister, the best selling novelist Anne Rice, in New Orleans. A professional nurse, she has also nurtured a profound interest in little-known periods of history. She published her debut novel, 'Devoted', in 1995.

As the powerful might of the legions of Rome sweep across Gaul, a land steeped in the ancient teaching of the Druid religion, an epic battle erupts between the shape shifter Manael, a werewolf, and Dryas, the powerful Druid priestess summoned to destroy him.

This werewolf fantasy is cleverly entwined with the story of Julius Caesar's conquering of ancient Gaul and will appeal both to reader's of fantasy books and those who like historical novels.
