Product Description

Product Description
Produced in association with the Rambler's Association and Harvey's Maps, this brand new series covers some of the most popular walking areas in Britain and Ireland, combining detailed route descriptions with information on the local history, wildlife and countryside. From gentle strolls alongside the lochs, to the ascent of Britain's highest mountain, this guide offers an unparalleled variety of landscapes for the enthusiastic walker to explore. *The introduction gives information about the topography, geology and history of the area, and describes the flora and fauna inhabiting it. *The main section of the book comprises 30 walks. Each walk has a key illustrating principal features, such as level of difficulty and type of terrain, a route profile indicating altitude and distances, as well as a fact file summarising useful information, such as start and finish points, duration, safety advice and points of interest. *Illustrated with colour maps from leading authority, Harveys, each walk is then described in detail with clear, easy-to-follow instructions. As well as route descriptions, the text gives the history of the main landmarks along the way plus information on the natural history of the area, and is accompanied by stunning colour photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Collins Ramblers Guides excellent!, 29 Oct 2004
By Jamie Bassnett (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
Over the past year I have used the Collins Ramblers guides for the Lake District, North Wales, Peak District, Ben Nevis and Glen Coe and others to choose day trip to the mountains and hills of Britain. They are fabulous books, well presented with full details and maps and as an added and very special bonus they contain the history and myths of the areas which always add an extra touch to each walk!

Definitely recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, 10 May 2004
If this book doesn't make you want to up sticks (work permitting), move to Fort William and enjoy the beautiful Highlands at every opportunity, then you really should check to see if you still have a pulse. If I ever find myself wondering (very rarely) of the wisdom in driving the 500+ miles necessary to enjoy this region, a brief browse through this guide leaves me in no doubt that not to go would definitely be insane.
The guide to each walk is very well written with excellent photographs and clear maps. The book also includes interesting snippets of history and legends which add to the appreciation of the area.
If you are planning to visit this area, then buy this book. If you are not, then buy the book and I guarantee you will go.

5.0 out of 5 stars from the beginner to the advanced, 21 Oct 2005
By A Customer
this essential tool should be in your baggage before you arrive in this amazing part of the UK. There are many walks that are described from low level to the heights of the West Highlands and bagging a Munro or 2. The route notes and maps are very easily followed, they also give information on public transport, refreshments, and facilities at the start, end and actually on the routes - there are many photos as well to give you an idea of the ground covered. Bound in a waterproof cover (mine was anyway) it has been up to the top of Ben Nevis 3 times, it has showed me a hidden underpass under the Caledonian canal, and every walk whether at valley floor or navigating across narrow ridges and aretes gives the reader the very best views of the Highlands. In August 2004, I sat down on Ben Nevis and watched the sun set over the distant isles with Golden Eagles circling overhead, and nobody but my partner in sight (even then we sat apart) - glorious!!
