Product Description

Product Description

"Collins Field Guide - Insects of Britain and Northern Europe" is comprehensive, easy to use/highly illustrated. This wholly updated and reset edition - the first since 1976 - brings this classic field guide right up to date. Although it has been completely rewritten, it still follows the same structure that was so highly praised in the previous editions. The first part of the book is a general introduction to the insect world, which is followed by the first of the many excellent illustrated identification keys. This primary key leads into the core of the book, the order descriptions. In each case, these give a short introduction to the key features of the order, including details of their biology, followed by specific identification keys. By following the keys, it is therefore possible for a beginner to identify nearly every species of insect, and learn about its biology at the same time. The text is illustrated with over 300 explanatory drawings and the 60 colour plates show 778 of the common species. "Indisputably the bargain of the year." - "New Statesman".

1.0 out of 5 stars Difficult in the Field, 25 Sep 2005
This guide is very difficult to use in the field as

- the colour plates are quite separate from the text,
- these colour plates concentrate on the leaves and never show the bark.
- the shape of the trees is only sometimes covered and then is sometimes to be found in the text and sometimes on the colour plates.
- the sizes of the leaves are only sometimes given but never on the colour plates.

As an example, look up the Hornbeam. The shape is only given for a variant 'Fastigiata' and the leaf size is given only for yet another variant 'Incisa'. Thus the shape and leaf size of the usual Hornbeam is not covered at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one to remeber!, 4 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Alan Mitchell died last year, and with him he took an incredible knowledge of what grows where and why. More than that. He took with him an outgoing personality hard to match - especially in the fields of horticulture and botany.

Old-fashioned, but solid in its design, this A5 hardback is a brilliant field guide. It is nonetheless highly useful at home - researching, comparing or reading: 'Grossly overplanted in villages...' Mitchell commented on the Copper beach - this is entertaining while counting leaflets...

5.0 out of 5 stars Get to know your local trees., 26 Oct 2009
I have found this book very useful for learning about my local trees. There are some useful keys for identifying for example Southern Beeches, Limes and Cockspur Thorns. However, don't expect keys for all the trees you find as some are difficult for example the Flowering Cherries and Rowans (of which there are many hundreds of varieties).
This is a small book suitable for taking out into the park and therefore you soon end up wanting more. More species, more pictures, more info - more of everything in fact. But that is to the author's credit as by now he has developed your interest in the subject.
As an introduction to trees growing in Britain and found in our streets and parks I can recommend this as an excellent starting point. Despite having been written thirty years ago I can understand why others regard it highly.
