5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent illustrated guide to UK Insects, 21 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This is like all the Collins Guides to wild life - very well illustrated and very well laid out. It is very good on Moths and Butterflies. There are weaknesses in the coverage of some other insects, but the field of Insects is so vast that it is unreasonable and down right impossible to expect ONE book to cover everything.

If you want to know about insects, this is the book to start with! The Illustrations are sensibly placed by species and the general lay-out of the book is easy to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best in its field, 12 Oct 2003

Hurrah for this book! Boo for the stupid publishers who took it out of print! So much better then the current hardback edition with fewer plates and consequently zero use as a field guide. Brilliant art with just the right jizz and if you don't find what you're looking for you are in danger of knowing too much!

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent field guide, 28 Sep 2005
this book is perfect to take in to the field as a generalist guide. my one criticism is that valuable page space is taken with western european species - why is it so hard to find a field guide which deals only with the UK? despite this however, this is still the best book of its type by a long shot and i cannot understand why there has not been a new edition.
